Oba Aderemi’s Impact on the Place of Ile-Ife in History
Ife Art remain a verified source of authority in Ile-Ife’s claim to ancient tradition and civilization. Apart from the three stone stools presented by Ooni Adenekan Olubushe to Sir Gilbert Carter in Lagos in 1895 and an half faced terracotta that found its way to to Europe before 1900, It was the seven terracotta heads and stolen Ori-Olokun bronze excavated by Leo Frobenius in 1910 that brought Ife to the global attention in history.
Nothing significant happened again until Oba Adesoji Aderemi ascended the throne of Oduduwa in September 1930. He was intentional in putting Ile-Ife to its rightful place in history as the cradle of mankind, centre of the world and the original home of the Yoruba people. This is contrary to the tales that Sultan Mohammed Bello gave to the Scottish Explorer Hugh Clapperton in the 1820s and recounted by Samuel Johnson in 1897 that Yorubas migrated from Saudi Arabia.
From 1931 Ooni Aderemi stated earnestly to collect figurines and artifacts for his private Museum in the palace. In 1937, he wrote and published a book titled “Notes on the City of Ile-Ife” where-in he re-established the dexterity of his ancestors as prosperous civilized creators and curators of arts and crafts. He challenged Frobenius conclusions that the Ife Arts must have been transported into Ile-Ife from a more superior culture. He cited some of his discoveries in his book. His private Museum collection formed the first set of artifacts displayed at the National Museum, Ife, the second Museum of Antiquities in Nigeria. It’s worthy of note that Oba Aderemi as the Head of the Native Authority started to fund the construction of the National Museum in 1948.
In 1938, after an accidental discovery in Wumonije compound, Ooni Aderemi approved excavation of the site by inviting colonial anthropologists. Between 1938 and 1978 there were over fifty major excavations conducted at successful sites like Wumonije, Lafogido, Ita Yemoo, Odo-Ogbe, Ogun Ladin, Olokun Grove, Osangangan Obamakin Grove, Iwinrin Grove, Obameri Grove, Obalara, Oduduwa College, Olokun Walode, Woye Asiri and Orun Oba Ado. His presence inspecting the sites were often informal and several times he takes over individual construction sites, gets the Colonial Government to compensate the owners and turn the property over to archaeological excavations.
Renowned Archaeologist that worked in Ile-Ife within this period includes Bernard Fagg, William Fagg, K. C. Murray, Frank Willet, Prof. John Goodwin, Oliver Myers, Peter Garlake, Dr Ekpo Eyo and Prof. Omotosho Eluyemi. The findings in Ife archaeological surveys ranges from bronze castings (brass and copper), terracotta heads and masks, decorative pottery, granite stone carvings, metal shavings and iron staffs, glass and bead works as well as the largest mass of potsherd pavements in west Africa. All these have twenty-five radiocarbon dates of between 600 AD (Orun Oba Ado) and 1660 AD (Woye Asiri).
Significantly, these exercises and discoveries according to Prof Thurstan Shaw makes it possible to isolate a period from the twelfth century to the fifteenth century as the period of Ife greatness as both a ceremonial and commercial centre with culture, power and prosperity. This is exactly one of what Oba Adesoji Aderemi sets out to achieve when he became the Ooni.

Alaafin faces dethronement, as Oyo State House of Assembly receives 6 petitions against Alaafin Owoade
Rt Hon Debo Ogundoyin
THE SPEAKER
Oyo State House of Assembly
Parliament Buildings, Secretariat
Agodi, Ibadan, Oyo State.
January 20, 2026
PETITION: CALL FOR AN URGENT INVESTIGATION INTO THE LEGITIMACY OF THE ALAAFIN SELECTION PROCESS AND THE ESCALATING CONFRONTATION WITH THE STATE EXECUTIVE
Honorable Speaker,
We, the concerned citizens and stakeholders of the Oyo Heritage Forum, hereby submit this formal petition to the "Pacesetter" House of Assembly. We seek an urgent legislative inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the appointment of Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I and the subsequent legal instability threatening the ancient stool of the Alaafin.
1. The Disregard for Traditional Consensus
It is a matter of public record and pending litigation that the Oyo Mesi (Kingmakers)—the sole traditional authority for selecting an Alaafin under the 1961 Declaration—originally voted overwhelmingly for Prince Lukman Gbadegesin.
The subsequent intervention by the State Government to appoint Oba Owoade bypasses the democratic and traditional consensus of the Kingmakers. We believe this "manipulated" selection undermines the sanctity of the throne and sets a dangerous precedent for the "rigging" of traditional stools by political actors.
2. Legal Vulnerability and Judicial Overreach
The current monarch’s position is precarious due to the ongoing suit (HOY/05/2025) by Prince Gbadegesin. The petition draws your attention to:
The Ifa Controversy: The use of "divination" to justify the selection, which contradicts a standing 2022 High Court ruling stating that Ifa consultation is not a legal requirement in the Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration.
The Warrant Chiefs Issue: The questionable use of emergency warrant chiefs to validate a selection that the substantive Oyo Mesi had already concluded.
3. Acts of Insubordination and Political Partisanship
Despite the government’s role in his ascension, Oba Owoade has taken the unprecedented step of suing the State Government over the Oyo State Council of Obas (Further Amendments) Law 2025.
This litigation, coupled with his visible alignment with the opposition APC party, constitutes "gross misconduct" and insubordination against the State Executive.
A monarch who is a product of government intervention cannot, in good conscience, turn around to challenge the state's legislative authority over the Council of Obas.
4. Our Prayers
The House of Assembly, as the representative of the people, has the power to oversee the peace and order of the state. We humbly pray the House to:
Convene a Public Hearing: Invite the surviving members of the Oyo Mesi to testify on whether the selection of Oba Owoade followed the Registered Declaration.
Review the Selection Process: Investigate if there was "political rigging" or undue influence in the submission of the monarch's name to the Executive Council.
Ensure Compliance with the 2025 Law: Ensure that no traditional ruler, regardless of historical status, is allowed to stall the rotational chairmanship which aims to bring equity to the Council of Obas.
Conclusion
The throne of Oyo belongs to the people, not to the highest political bidder. If the foundation of a King’s reign is built on manipulation, the structure cannot stand. We urge the House to act before the "Staff of Office" is further devalued by court battles and partisan bickering.
Respectfully submitted,
Otunba Dare Adelekan
Group Chief Executive

Life has a wicked sense of irony. Let’s stop rewriting history and face FACTS. In the old Oyo State, the Ooni of Ife was the undisputed permanent chairman of the Council of Obas. Nobody questioned it. Nobody protested it.
It was Alaafin Adeyemi himself who allegedly pushed the Olubadan to stir agitation for rotational chairmanship. This is not rumor — it was documented back then in TELL magazine.
In response, Ooni Sijuade reportedly boycotted the Council entirely until Osun State was carved out. Then suddenly, after Osun was created, Alaafin Adeyemi turned around and wanted the same permanent chairmanship he had earlier fought against. Classic case of shooting oneself in the foot.
Before people start making emotional comments, let it be clear: none of the old Western State monarchs ever disputed Ooni’s permanent chairmanship. The confusion only started after the political games and palace intrigues introduced by what many now call “iku baba yeye politics.”
So the big question Nigerians should be asking is this: how does any Alaafin demand what his own predecessor openly resisted? Karma has a long memory.
Now fast-forward to today — Alaafin Owoade is saying he doesn’t want rotation anymore. Really? After the foundation of rotation was laid by your own throne?
Agreement is agreement.
History is history.
You can bend politics, but you can’t erase FACTS.
Always fear karma.
