The air in the school hallway was thick with the scent of cheap perfume and stale lockers. Moana leaned against a column, clutching her literature textbook like a shield, watching the crowd.
Chloe approached, her voice hushed.
Chloe: You okay? You’ve been staring at the vending machine for ten minutes.
Moana: (Sighs, not moving) I’m fine. Just… observing the ecosystem.
A wave of laughter rippled through a cluster of students nearby. Leading the group, with a casual arm around another girl, was Leo. He was the kind of handsome that made everyone forgive his flaws—except for the one flaw Moana couldn't.
Chloe: (Follows Moana’s gaze, her expression hardening) Oh. Him. Still making a spectacle of his new conquest?
Moana: It’s not about the conquest, Chloe. It’s the way he looks at her. It’s the same way he used to look at me when we were… us. Like I was the only thing that mattered between classes.
Chloe: He’s a jerk. You know that. He trades people out like last season’s clothes.
Moana: (Her voice drops to a near whisper) But why? Why the theatrics? We were together for a year. He acts like I’m a ghost in the hallway, like I never existed. Like the inside jokes, the late-night calls, the promises… they just evaporate when he moves on.
Leo happened to glance over, his eyes skimming over Moana without recognition before settling back on the girl beside him, smiling wide.
Moana: (Turns away abruptly, a painful lump forming in her throat) See? It's the erasure. It's not the break-up that kills you, it's realizing that you meant so little that he can just delete your whole chapter without blinking. I keep replaying everything, trying to find the moment I turned into wallpaper.
Chloe: Stop it, Moana. You didn't turn into wallpaper. He just has terrible vision. You’re smart, you’re funny, you’re kind. The anger you feel is valid. You don't deserve this zero-emotion treatment.
Moana: (A bitter laugh escapes her) Tell that to my brain. Every time I see him, it’s a physical punch. And I have to pass his stupid group every single day. I hate that this school feels smaller now. I hate that I have to adjust my whole route just to avoid seeing the person who broke my heart acting like his life is suddenly brighter now that I’m gone.
Chloe: (Puts an arm around Moana's shoulder, guiding her gently away from the crowd) Then let’s go a different way. We'll go to the library. You don't have to face him. Not today. You're too big and too important to be made to feel small by a boy whose attention span is shorter than a commercial break.
Moana: (Nods slowly, leaning into her friend. Her gaze falls to the ground, focusing on her shoes) I just wish I could forget him as easily as he forgot me. That's the real win, isn't it? Being the one who gets over it first.
Chloe: The real win is being genuinely happy without him. And we'll get there. Come on. Lunch is in fifteen minutes. Let's talk about anything else. Tell me about your mom's latest lecture.
Moana offers a small, weak smile, the first one that day, and lets Chloe lead her down the quieter side of the hallway, leaving the echoes of Leo's laughter behind. The angst doesn't disappear, but for now, it's manageable.
