UNITED ORTHODOXY

Proverbs 16:32 ⌛️☦️

„Monasticism is the royal path of mysticism. Its meaning lies in the erection of the spiritual vertical, the axis of eternity, which connects heaven and earth. Monasticism is not outward, but rather hidden, an inner organ of the Body of Jesus Christ. Monks are guardians of the innermost sanctuary.

True monasticism is not based in this world, but in God, in eternity. It cannot be traced back to forms of life and rules, nor to human ideas or inclinations. It cannot be explained psychologically or sociologically. Whoever fails in the world, fails even more in the monastery.

A monk is one who is touched by God in his innermost being and is torn out of earthly normality; and who thereupon, in perfect freedom and love, offers himself to God as a total sacrifice, consecrating his life to Him with all his strength, with all his heart and mind, with body and soul. The monk lives in God, in Him he breathes, in Him and through Him he works. This high ideal becomes a concrete reality of life with the entry into the holy following of a living old father. With the whole sacrifice man crosses the threshold to the holy of holies of the spiritual temple.

Beyond all visible activities, the monk practices the perpetual spiritual prayer, the immediate communication with God, in order to be completely in God already in this earthly life. The goal of the orthodox monastic life is divinization, the realization of the eternal archetype. The thought of God, His longing, is to be recognized and realized.

Whoever wants to become a monk must have already seen through the deception of this fallen world to some extent, but without despairing. He must be free inwardly and outwardly. The basic impulse should not be rejection, not contempt, but love.

In the sacred tradition, monasticism is also described as the Christian continuation of the Old Testament prophethood. John the Baptist is the last monk of the old covenant; John the Evangelist is the first monk of the new covenant. This refers to the monk's immediacy of spirit.

The "ascetic instructions" of our holy father Basileios the Great are not "monastic rules" in the Western sense, but practical unfolding of the Gospel, fundamental instructions for a consecrated life. Indispensable, moreover, remains the oral, the so-called "unwritten" tradition, passed on by the ancient father in common life to the disciples from mouth to ear, from heart to heart, from spirit to spirit. The claims of God, as handed down in certain words of Jesus Christ in the Gospels, are accepted unabridged and in their full spiritual sense. In obedience to the Abbot and in learning and internalizing the sacred tradition, everything else then takes place.“ -Father Johannes von Buchhagen-
