In my video on Koh Lay Huan, I mentioned that he was the one and only Kapitan Cina of Penang. Then, later on, I found on Wikipedia that there are two individuals who were Kapitan Cina in Penang, with the years they serve:
1894–1908 Cheah Ching Hui (謝清輝)
1908–1918 Cheah Yong Chong (謝榮宗)

How could this be?

Well, Koh Lay Huan (辜礼欢, Gū Lǐhuān) was the first and only official Kapitan Cina of Penang during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. After his death in 1826, the British abolished the role in Penang, choosing not to appoint a successor. The colonial government preferred direct administration through British officials, bypassing Chinese community leaders in formal roles like Kapitan.

Cheah Ching Hui (謝清輝) and Cheah Yong Chong (謝榮宗) were prominent leaders in Penang’s Chinese community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some local records and references may have referred to them informally or honorifically as Kapitan Cina, due to their leadership roles within clan associations, community organizations, and advisory positions to the colonial government. However, there is no evidence of a formal British colonial appointment restoring the official office of Kapitan Cina in Penang after Koh Lay Huan.

📜 Hidden Brotherhoods, Forgotten Histories
Did you know that Penang’s Chinese community was shaped in part by a secret society born in Qing-era China?

My latest video uncovers the Tiandihui (天地會) — a brotherhood of rebels, refugees, and revolutionaries that journeyed across the sea and quietly left their mark on our history.

From Koh Lay Huan to Sun Yat-sen, from hidden oaths to open revolutions, this story connects Penang to a much deeper legacy.

▶️ Watch it here: https://youtu.be/Ig2SOEiulL8

Let me know what you think — and if you’ve heard whispers of the Tiandihui in your family stories too.
