Honor Killing in Balochistan: Viral Video Sparks Outrage, Tribal Chief Denies Holding Any Jirga
A disturbing video showing the alleged honor killing of a man and a woman has gone viral in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, leading to the arrest of a tribal chief and one other individual. The video, which surfaced more than a month after the incident, has reignited debates over extrajudicial justice and tribal customs.
According to police officials, the victims were reportedly killed under the pretext of so-called "honor" – a practice still prevalent in several parts of Pakistan. In Balochistan, such killings are referred to as Siyah Kaari, while in parts of Sindh, they are known as Karo-Kari. These acts are often sanctioned by local tribal councils or jirgas, bypassing the country’s legal system.
SSP Investigation Wing Syed Saboor Agha told We initially detained 11 suspects. Out of them, two have now been formally arrested, including the tribal chief accused of ordering the murders. Investigations are ongoing for the remaining individuals.”
Police say the incident took place three days before Eid. However, the video only surfaced online 35 days later, prompting senior government officials to order a formal investigation.
Interestingly, the arrested tribal chief has denied holding any jirga or issuing a death order, claiming instead that “the people themselves decided to carry out the killing.”
The case once again sheds light on the urgent need to tackle parallel justice systems and protect vulnerable individuals from such brutal customs.
