I left most social media in the summer of 2022 and I fortunately haven't been able to get back into it. I likely won't get into bluesky either, but I decided to preemptively create an account and secure the username, just in case I have a change of heart for some inexplicable reason. Check it out:

I have recently had the opportunity to play the demo for Stratagem Lost ahead of time - an indie SRPG that takes inspiration from Fire Emblem, among many others. For the sake of transparency: They clarified that I was not obligated to cover the game in any way; but I did quite enjoy the two chapters I played and would like to talk about it.

What stands out immediately, before getting into any gameplay, is the artstyle. The grungy look is present across all the game's visual elements, such as the maps, the UI and the combat animations. The animations are quick, snappy and quite massive as they take up the whole screen. Definitely one of the highlights for me.

One unique aspect of the gameplay that I enjoyed was the stamina system - every playable character has a fixed amount of stamina that gets replenished at the start of every turn. Any action performed by your units, such as moving, attacking and using combat skills requires stamina. You can perform as many actions per turn as you want, assuming you have the required stamina. This means that units can move, attack, and move again, for example. I found this aspect very interesting and I presume it will lead to some crazy strategic shenanigans as the enemy counts and possible actions increase. This system also goes hand-in-hand with the game's relatively player phase focused enemy placement, as you frequently have to run up on opponents rather than waiting for them to come over. I played on Veteran difficulty, which is the penultimate hardest out of four.

I don't have many points of criticism as the game is still in development, but one would be the processing of the voice lines. The voice acting itself is perfectly fine; the cast has some relatively big names and the performances are great. But there seems to be little to no dynamics processing done on the voice recordings, as such they fluctuate in volume sometimes, which can be a bit jarring.

The public release of the demo will be on October 14th this year. Check out the game's Steam page below:

Fire Emblem ~Character Theme Collection~ was released on September 21 of 1990, and is the last ever instance of the series' longtime composer Yuka Tsujiyoko being credited with what is presumably her birth name, Yuka Baba. The name was previously spelled "Banba" in the credits of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light.

Exclusive Fire Emblem Cipher cards that were included in two of the three "Cavalier Duo" arrangement albums. The two in the first image came with the Jinbaittai album, while the ones in the second are from Shippuujinrai.

The creator of Fire Emblem, Shouzou Kaga, has recently confirmed his age as "turning 70 next year", meaning he was born in 1955. This follows years of speculation where his year of birth was claimed to be anything from 1950 to the late 1960s.
