To my fellow citizens, this is Ian Alleyne, and at 1:30 PM today (Saturday 21st September 2019), the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (Met Office) has upgraded its Weather Alert to Orange Level.
Periods of heavy to intense showers and/or thunderstorms are likely. Heavy/intense downpours are expected to result in street/flash flooding. Gusty winds in excess of 65 km/hr can be expected. The risk of landslides/landslips is very high in prone areas. Sea conditions are also likely to become occasionally rough. This is expected to last until Monday 23rd September 2019.
I would like to advise all citizens to take extra precautions during this time. Adequate preparations should be made to safeguard life and property and a safety plan should be created in case of an emergency. Those living in flood prone areas should either seek to evacuate or make preparations to cushion the effects of possible disaster.
The Local Government Ministry also wishes to advise citizens that sand bags are available at the various Municipal Corporations today and to contact your Corporation to confirm collection times.
Lastly, let us come together and say a prayer for our twin islands and its citizens to weather this storm. I would like the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago to know that I stand firmly with you during this time. We have set up 24-hour operators so please contact us in case of any emergency. Call, text or Whatsapp 294-4081, 330-4426 or 390-4426. Let me know what is happening in your area and know I am here for you. God bless our nation.
