Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar Dies in Bandits' Captivity

The Katsina State Government has officially confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who had been held captive by bandits for several weeks.

In a statement released through the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu'azu, the government said:

"Katsina State Government announces the passing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar. The retired General, who had been in bandits' captivity for several weeks, died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension. His abduction and subsequent death represent not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but also a monumental loss to the nation. Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extends his deepest condolences to the family of the late General and Nigerians at large. This tragic incident is a dark moment and a reminder of the urgent need for collective and intensified efforts against criminal elements threatening the peace and security of our communities. The Governor reaffirms his administration's commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure those responsible are brought to justice. We remain unwavering in our resolve to eradicate banditry and guarantee the safety of lives and property across Katsina State."

The announcement brought an end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding the fate of the retired military officer, whose kidnapping had drawn widespread attention across Nigeria.

Nigeria has once again been confronted with the painful reality of insecurity following the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of armed bandits in Katsina State.

The former military officer, who once served as Director of Defence Information and spokesperson for the Nigerian Armed Forces, was abducted alongside his wife on May 30, 2026, while traveling through Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. The couple was reportedly on their way to attend a wedding when armed men intercepted their vehicle and whisked them away into the forest.

According to reports from the Katsina State Government, Major General Abubakar died while in captivity after suffering complications related to diabetes and hypertension. Despite efforts by security agencies and state authorities to secure his release, the rescue mission ultimately ended in tragedy.

His death has sent shockwaves across the country, particularly within military circles, where he was respected for his years of service and contributions to national security.

Initial reports indicated that the retired general and his wife were attacked along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli road in Katsina State. Their driver reportedly sustained gunshot injuries but survived the attack. The couple was then taken away by the kidnappers while security authorities launched efforts to track their whereabouts.

As days passed, concerns about their safety continued to grow. A video later surfaced online showing the retired general and his wife in captivity, appealing for intervention. Reports suggested that the kidnappers demanded the release of detained associates rather than a conventional ransom payment, further complicating negotiations.

Major General Rabe Abubakar was widely known for serving as Director of Defence Information between 2015 and 2017. During his military career, he played a significant role in communicating the Armed Forces' operations, particularly during critical periods of Nigeria's fight against insurgency and terrorism.

He earned respect for his professionalism, discipline, and commitment to national service. His years in uniform made him a familiar figure to many Nigerians, particularly during his tenure as the military's spokesperson.

The death of a retired senior military officer in captivity highlights the persistent security challenges facing northwestern Nigeria. States including Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kaduna continue to experience attacks by armed bandit groups responsible for kidnappings, village raids, cattle rustling, and violent assaults on civilians.

For many Nigerians, the incident serves as a stark reminder that insecurity remains one of the nation's most pressing challenges. If a retired general can fall victim to such criminal activity, concerns naturally arise about the safety of ordinary citizens living in affected communities.

Governor Radda's statement reflects growing calls for stronger cooperation between federal authorities, state governments, local communities, and security agencies in addressing the root causes of banditry and restoring lasting peace.

While the nation mourns the loss of Major General Abubakar, questions remain regarding the fate of his wife and the identities of those responsible for the abduction. Security agencies have pledged to intensify ongoing operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating across the region.

The Katsina State Government has also reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice and that efforts to eliminate banditry remain a top priority.

The death of Major General Rabe Abubakar is not only a heartbreaking loss for his family but also a national tragedy that underscores the urgency of Nigeria's security crisis. His life was dedicated to serving and protecting the nation, making the circumstances surrounding his death particularly painful.

As Nigerians reflect on his legacy, many hope that his passing will renew the determination of authorities and stakeholders to confront insecurity and build a safer future for all citizens.

In a historic moment for global business and entrepreneurship, Elon Musk has reportedly become the world's first trillionaire following the public listing of SpaceX on the Nasdaq. The company's stock began trading at a strong valuation, pushing its market capitalization close to the $2 trillion mark and significantly increasing Musk's personal fortune.
The SpaceX founder and CEO has seen his wealth surge due to his substantial ownership stake in the company. With billions of shares and stock options tied to SpaceX, Musk's net worth has climbed beyond the trillion-dollar threshold, marking a milestone that many experts once considered impossible.
Musk's rise to unprecedented wealth has been one of the most remarkable financial journeys in modern history. Just over a decade ago, he was worth a few billion dollars and ranked far below the world's richest individuals. However, the rapid growth of companies such as SpaceX and Tesla transformed him into the wealthiest person on the planet.
The achievement highlights the enormous value being created by technology-driven businesses and the growing influence of private innovation in sectors such as space exploration, artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, and global communications.
For many observers, Musk's ascent symbolizes a new era in wealth creation, where visionary entrepreneurs can build fortunes at a pace never before seen in human history. At the same time, it raises important questions about wealth concentration, economic inequality, and the role of billionaires in shaping the future of society.
Whether viewed as a triumph of innovation or a sign of changing economic realities, Elon Musk's emergence as the world's first trillionaire marks a significant chapter in the history of global business and entrepreneurship.
