Just watched Rebirth....Might be the WORST of the franchise ngl.
It felt like a really well made fan film - well shot and obviously had production value, but the terrible writing, and the lack of craft and technique on display is much more consistent with the amateur work of fans than the work of what is meant to be well-seasoned professionals.
The script is dumb, unfocused, and confusing? Also it's small in scope and feels like a B adventure, which COULD work if the characters were interesting and entertaining, but they're not - so it just feels incredibly underwhelming. The characters are a giant mess, I touch on this more below.
The action scenes and set pieces were really stale and honestly boring - again the lack of technique on display when it comes to executing these is just amazing because these obviously cost millions of dollars to produce. There's no build up, no rising stakes, and nothing interesting is really done with ANY of the dinosaurs. Even though they're considered the worst of the franchise - Fallen Kingdom and Dominion had better set pieces. Fallen Kingdom's Gyrosphere scene is goated - even if the movie is not great. Ditto for the Therizinosaurus scene in Dominion.
Nothing near that interesting or well made exists in this film.
SPOILERS GOING FORWARD!!!!!
The characterization of Scarlett Johansson is all over the place - she's introduced as the best of the best of mercenaries, which is why she's able to ask for a crazy amount of money - then she instantly risks it all just to pick up some kids and their father who were shipwrecked by the very dangerous thing they are trying to find. Which will only endanger their mission, the lives of everyone onboard, the ridiculous payment (ie her motivation) she negotiated and is trying to receive, and oh yeah - THE FAMILY ITSELF. The whole family almost dies again and members of her crew get killed due to this decision. The kids were also really unlikeable, and bad actors.
Honestly the whole time I was rooting for the dinos to eat everyone.
That's the main thing though - nothing interesting is done with the dinos. The D.rex is wasted and boring, along with all the other hybrids. All the dinos honestly feel like throwaways here. Like they could've put any dinosaur or creature here and nothing would have changed. I was never a huge fan of the Indominus Hybrids but they were central to the plot and at least those movies were trying to do something interesting with them. They didn't feel like throwaways like the hybrids and dinos do here. So it literally fails at the dinosaurs themselves. Great job everyone.
The whole premise is just dumb by the way - Hybrid dino DNA to stop heart disease? What. And they need it from the dinos because they were LARGE?? Bro - get DNA from an African Elephant and a BLUE WHALE - both mammals, not dinosaurs, and are much more abundant and easy to access than DINOSAURS! This makes no sense at all even in a fictional world where dinosaurs exist.
The only character I was invested in was the bad guy - he had a clear goal that he was driven to achieve and clear motivation - really wanted him to get that DNA and hopefully get a nice corporate bonus 🙏🏻 RIP my guy 😔🙏🏻
I have a lot more to say but this is getting long enough lol - Should I do a livestream going over this more?? 👀
Check out our final T. rex design! 🦖 “Scotty” is copyrighted tho, so it looks like we’ll have to give him his own name… 👀🔥
And for anyone wondering why I didn’t include bright red or colorful displays on the horns:
The closest living analogs to T. rex — crocodilians, monitor lizards, and predatory birds — don’t have those bright displays, whether they’re male or female. And, although I could be completely off here, I noticed that functional display structures (like deer antlers used in combat) generally aren’t brightly colored. It’s usually the display structures of non-predatory birds — ones not used in direct fighting — that show those vibrant colors.
Since we know that T. rexes regularly bit and fought each other, I think they wouldn’t need those colors for their displays to work. They were fighting for mates the old-fashioned way: by actually fighting.
Scotty’s Paint Job Done? 🦖 Really liking the red horn as a display feature — just needs some drool and movement now. But first, I’ve got two more Rexes to finish! 👀👀
🖌️ Paint job time for Scotty the T. rex! Looking at a lot of Monitor Lizards for this one, as probably one of the closest real-world analogs for how a scaled dinosaur like T. rex might’ve looked.
What do you think? Should I keep it grounded or go a bit bold with the color scheme? 👀🦖🎨
