A British F-35 fighter jet made an emergency landing at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in Kerala on Saturday night around 9:30 pm due to low fuel. The aircraft had taken off from the British Royal Navy’s flagship aircraft carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, but could not land back on it because of worsening weather and rough sea conditions. The pilot contacted Indian Air Traffic Control on an international distress frequency and was granted permission to land at Thiruvananthapuram for safety reasons.

The Indian Air Force was fully aware of the emergency landing and facilitated the aircraft's safe landing and refueling. The jet is currently parked at the airport, awaiting clearance from Indian authorities to return to its carrier base. The incident is considered a normal occurrence of diversion and is not unprecedented for the F-35, which is designed for short take-offs and vertical landings but was hindered by bad weather.

The F-35 is part of the UK Carrier Strike Group led by HMS Prince of Wales, which is deployed in the Indo-Pacific region and recently conducted joint naval exercises with the Indian Navy. The emergency landing was handled professionally with all necessary airport emergency protocols activated to ensure safety.
