DEVGRU Gold Squadron operator Aaron Carson Vaughn, U.S. Navy SEAL. Killed in action on August 6, 2011 during the Extortion 17 shootdown in Wardak Province, Afghanistan.

Vaughn was one of 30 American service members lost when a CH-47 Chinook helicopter, call sign Extortion 17, was shot down by insurgents while inserting a quick reaction force during a combat operation. The tragedy remains the largest single loss of life in the history of U.S. Naval Special Warfare.

A devoted husband, father, and warrior, Aaron Vaughn’s legacy continues through the families, teammates, and the community that honors the sacrifice of the Extortion 17 heroes.

On June 17, 2005, Delta Force MSG Robert M. Horrigan and fellow Delta teammate MSG Michael L. McNulty were part of a Delta Force assault element conducting a nighttime raid near Al-Qaim in western Iraq, targeting insurgents tied to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

The operation was part of a wider JSOC campaign to dismantle Al-Qaeda networks operating along the Syrian border. After intelligence identified a suspected safehouse, the assault team moved in under cover of darkness to clear the compound. Horrigan and McNulty—both veteran Delta operators known for their experience in reconnaissance, sniper support, and direct-action missions—were among the assaulters responsible for entering and clearing the structure.

As the team breached and began clearing rooms, insurgents inside triggered a prepared defensive position: a concealed bunker and fortified firing point built within the house specifically to ambush anyone entering. A sudden burst of close-range small-arms fire erupted from the hidden position, turning the entry into a brutal firefight inside the building. During the engagement, both Horrigan and McNulty were fatally wounded while fighting alongside their teammates in the confined space of the compound. The assault force later destroyed the fortified structure with an airstrike to eliminate the remaining militants and their defensive position.

For their bravery and sacrifice, both men were posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart, honoring their courage in combat and the ultimate price they paid in the line of duty.
