James’Gunn superman is definitely a new look on the old superhero. In 2025 movie superman isn’t portrayed as an unbeatable character but as one of us, humans, he has his strength indeed but it’s not something that makes him unstoppable, he ultimately defeats not because of his powers but because of how other treat him and want to save him, furthermore it’s not him who saves others but it’s others who save him, and that definitely something new and interesting. Saying that it’s way clearer now why DC studios had to replace Henry Cavill, he was simply playing absolutely different character in terms of his nature.
However this film in my opinion has a lot of downfalls. For me it was just an another James Gunn superhero movie, you won’t find anything new that you haven’t seen already in his other superhero movie, for instance Pracemaker has a very similar structure, the only difference is age limit. As any other superhero movie you might find yourself bored time after time, cause there is nothing in terms of storyline that you haven’t seen anywhere else. Metropolis is getting destroyed again, poor in terms of physical action fights and the stupid plan of the main villain - Lex Luther, he is played with charisma though by Nicholas Hoult, but it doesn’t make his plan any more logical.
As a main advantages I’d highlight humour, story line and minor characters. James Gunn is a master of satire, you’ll find a lot of laughter about our current lives and. He also makes fun of other superhero movies stereotypes, however he has absolutely same problems in his film, why? I have no idea. Story line here on the other hand for the first time felt real and interesting, compare to “Man of Steel” this movie takes an absolutely different approach to Lois Lane, here they’re not just adults who live together, but people in their 20s who have chemistry and interesting dialogs. Minor characters here play crucial role without them whole humour pattern for me wouldn’t work, specifically I’d like to mention Mr. Terrific he is a typical James’ Gunn hilarious character, not that we haven’t seen in Guardians but it’s a pleasure to have such a good humorous and character anyway.
Don’t expect anything about this film and you won’t find yourself disappointed, it’s not a new chapter in superhero movies, it’s just an alright DC film woth watching.
