Hello YouTube! I've come to make an announcement!

First of all, a thank you to everyone for being so patient with my extremely sporadic schedule, especially in the past few weeks. Some of you already know, but in case you don't, I have been in a Ph.D. program for quite some time, which has been my top priority.

Well, about that Ph.D. program: just today, ~7.5 YEARS or work finally came to fruition, because I PASSED MY DISSERTATION DEFENSE! This was the final major task in completing my program. Now I'm just tying up loose ends and I'll be getting my degree in a matter of weeks!

For 25 (26?) years straight, I have been a student in some form - preschool, K-12, college, or graduate - and have always identified as such first and foremost. You probably notice that many of my logos have been inspired by my academic experience. It has been a privilege to learn so much and be supported by so many great minds along the way. And, passing the defense has assured me that I "gave back" appropriately and contributed to academia as much as I have benefited from it.

It also marks the end (well, the beginning of the end) of this 25 year journey, and the start of a new one, where I take charge of my future, and put the skills I have developed as an academic and a person to the test as I decide my path in life. This newfound freedom - it's equally exciting and intimidating. Obviously, I look forward to pursuing my dream career in academia, forming new relationships and establishing an independent life for myself. But I confess, once I was told I earned the degree, my first thought was, "What now?"

I don't think there's an easy answer to that question, but there's a certain beauty in the fact that the answer isn't something I find, but something I CHOOSE. And thus begins my foray into full-fledged adulthood - making those decisions that lead to answering "What now?" in a way that works for me. Now I'm really flying into the future!


I have to thank my awesome family, friends, cohorts, advisors, what have you for supporting me through the highs and lows of my scholastic career, and as usual, my viewers for growing my silly little side hobby into something enriching to an entire community. For obvious reasons, I do not thank Shadow the Hedgehog. Because he's a b--

Hello everyone! Another update to let you all know I'm still here and haven't been hit by ID verification. Instead I haven't been active due to a double whammy of computer problems (I can't update Linux on my main PC) and school assignments.

I think making a post like this _every_ time I momentarily become inactive will get annoying after a while. If you're worried about me getting hit by the ID laws, check my Vimeo. If I'm posting on Vimeo but not on YT, I am having some YT-specific problem, ID-related or otherwise. If I'm not posting on EITHER platform, it just means I got busy.

Hi everyone, just another update to let you know I'm still alive and haven't been blocked from using YouTube.

In addition to being behind on videos, I am also sick. I've been sleeping a lot more and focusing on schoolwork when I'm awake, hence the video drought.

I'm gonna call it here for my 15th Anniversary / 30K Subscriber marathon so it doesn't drag on too long. I want to return to making edits of things other than my Janus logo, and I'm gonna start when I am back on a better schedule. If I want to make more edits of the Janus logo in the future, I'll just do that as a normal part of my lineup.

Thank you to everyone who joined me for the celebration, and who heaped praise on my new logo! Despite the inopportune timing of the celebration, I'm glad we were all able to have fun. Stay Kyoonified!

New logo drops tomorrow! Here’s another hint! I think you’ll be impressed.

My plan is to upload the videos in my 15th anniversary, 30K subscriber celebration both to YouTube and Vimeo (vimeo.com/kyoonix) so my viewers have an alternative if the new age verification policies on YouTube become obtrustive. I can guarantee I’ll have my new logo, and a decidedly thorough destruction of my previous one, ready tomorrow. I will also try to have a video where I talk about the design inspirations and process for my new logo before Wednesday, when the age verification policy is rolled out in the US. After that I plan to upload a handful of videos with some of my most popular old effects and some of my favorite new effects as well. I am still on a big time crunch and I’ll have to figure some things out as I go. Regardless, I’m going to work hard to give you all the proper thanks for your continued support of my channel and your own efforts to build the experimental editing comminuty!

Minor sad news: I will probably have to delay my next logo and 15TH anniversary celebration.

I suppose the writing was already on the wall, seeing as I haven't been able to do a 30K subscriber marathon like I had hoped. This is a very pivotal time for me in my research program, and as luck would have it, I have an important meeting _the day after_ my 15TH anniversary. Preparing for that has to be my top priority now.

I hope I don't give the impression that celebrating my community's support isn't important to me; far from it! It means so much to me that viewers have stuck with my channel for 15 years, and it's the reason I still keep making videos at all! But also, if I'm going to run a YouTube channel for 15 years - mind you, this is a time span that goes from before high school to full-fledged adulthood - it's inevitable that life will get in the way, and I will have to focus on other things. Especially when decisions about my career path are involved, and especially ESPECIALLY when deadlines are imminent.

Moreover, it's important to have a _good_ celebration where I really push the limits of my technological prowess and make my viewers excited for the future (and the past!) and not pump out something rushed. I feel I would be doing a disservice to you otherwise.

Luckily I at least usually have enough free time to make my typical videos, so I don't expect to completely cease activity altogether; I especially want to maintain some activity to make use of Sony Vegas now that I can use it again. But nothing is set in stone, and until I have more clarity on the direction of my academic career, I will have to make unpredictable concessions here.

This is why I appreciate the experimental editing community so much! Even when there are times I can't keep up, there are others who continue to innovate and impress. Even when I do resolve the uncertainty around my grad program now, I have to accept that I'm entering a stage in my life where I become more independent and career-focused (read: "adulting") and I may never again be able to run my channel with the same level of activity as in the "golden days". But, experimental editing is more than just my channel now, and I'm as excited to see _your_ new ideas as you are to see mine!
