he Final Visitors of the Day


As the day faded and the light dimmed, we stayed quietly by, watching the gentle race unfold — who would be the last bird to visit the water before darkness fully set in? 👀💧 The blackbird (Turdus merula) — usually a late guest — didn’t take the final spot tonight. For a moment, we thought it might be the goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis)… but then came the greenfinch (Chloris chloris), calmly arriving at the edge. Another goldfinch showed up too! And even a sparrow (Passer domesticus) — could that be the last one to rest? 🐦

Sometimes, around this hour, a wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) appears, but not tonight. The great tit (Parus major) is also known to show up late… but it stayed hidden today as well. Meanwhile, the wasps and bees 🐝 kept coming to drink — surprisingly persistent, even as the light faded. 🌙

Then — attention! ⚠️ A redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros) made its entrance! Could it be the final bird of the day? At 8:53 PM, the redstart landed, and we were impressed. 👏✨ By now, it was quite dark… any bird arriving at this point would struggle to find a perch for the night. 🕯️

And then it happened — the camera switched to night mode 🎥🌌. From here on, only nocturnal birds might grace us with their presence. In this quiet place, it’s not unusual to hear the soft, haunting calls of the little owl (Athene noctua) or the tawny owl (Strix aluco) echoing through the dark. 🦉👂

And just to lighten the moment — a dog wandered into the frame 🐕… but hey, dogs don’t count! lol 😄

With the last light gone and the camera deep in night mode, our peaceful watch comes to an end. Let’s see if the night birds will surprise us… 🌌🦉💧

Today, we were surprised by a quiet visitor: a cat that came in from outside the space we usually observe. The dogs, who aren’t particularly fond of cats, didn’t spot him — which was already a stroke of luck for the feline. But what happened next was even more remarkable.

The cat, discreet and clever, hid in the tall grass you can see in the background of the image. We watched him closely, curious about his behavior, and it quickly became clear he wasn’t just hiding — he was waiting.

Suddenly, a few birds flew toward the area where he was concealed. Then, in a flash, the cat leapt out from the grass. From what we could see, it’s very likely he caught one of them. The timing and precision were so unexpected that we had to replay the footage several times.

In the following clip, you can see the whole moment unfold. Pay close attention to the grass in the background… wait a few seconds, and watch carefully. It’s a brief but striking scene — a wild moment, captured almost by accident.
