πŸ§‘β€πŸŽ“ Ano Sensei: The Poetry Professor

This channel is for people who want to engage with literature, not just memorize the β€œright” answers. Explore English poetry, language, and literature in their historical and cultural contexts, with an emphasis on close reading and critical thinking.

The content is for teachers, students, and independent readers who want to deepen their understanding, sharpen analytical skills, and gain confidence as readers of English literature. You will find close readings, short lectures on technique and form, and discussions of the history and background to major texts.

I am John Yamamoto‑Wilson, a Cambridge PhD and retired professor of English literature, now focusing on helping viewers read more thoughtfully and teach more effectively. Viewers are invited to join this community of learners, leave questions in the comments, and suggest poems or topics for future videos.

Changes in YouTube's algorithm have made things harder for small channels, especially channels that have seasonal popularity, with - in my case - a big difference between the number of viewers during school term time and the holidays. One way forward is to encourage people to join as channel members. Accordingly, I am increasing the number of members-only videos on this channel. This includes new videos and some "oldies but goodies" that viewers have largely forgotten about.

I have also more or less stopped answering grammar questions. I still acknowledge them and give short replies, but if you want to get into discussion about a grammar point, you'll have to join as a channel member and post your question here: https://youtu.be/JiEmdhU06oM?feature=...

Please let me know what you think about the channel and the direction it is moving in, together with any suggestions you have for video topics, etc. Your feedback is welcome and helps me to develop the channel in a way that benefits everyone. Thank you.

This channel is struggling! Partly it is because I took a break of several months during the spring of this year, but even before that it was not growing as I had hoped. I still enjoy making videos and I want to continue, but it is hard not to feel discouraged by the channel's poor performance.

The graph below shows the number of hours people spent watching my videos in the last two years. The numbers inside the black squares show the number of videos made. You may need to click on it to see the whole image.

Please, if you like this channel, support it by telling others, making suggestions for content and ways to improve and, if you are able, joining as a channel member. Thank you!

I'm back! After a break of four months, Ano sensei is starting to make videos again. As usual, members will see previews of videos before they are made public, and more videos will be added to the "members only" playlist. Remember, members can also get detailed replies to questions about video content. Don't forget to add a member icon when you post!

One significant update I made recently was a new, improved version of one of my most successful early videos, an analysis of John Keats's "Ode to a Nightingale". I've done what I can to encourage viewers to watch the new version and not the old one, but somehow most people are still watching the old version and don't seem to realize that the new version is there! Here is the new version; please update your bookmarks/embed code, etc.!

Hi! In the upcoming grammar live stream we've got several short "starter" questions for you, and then we'll be moving on to an in-depth discussion of phrasal and prepositional verbs. https://youtu.be/6d1KSgvtXjY

There are now 22 premium videos in the curated grammar live stream series, in addition to seven which are publicly available. I'm aiming to bring the total of premium videos up to 50 and keep it there (older videos will then be made public as new videos get added). Here's the playlist link: tinyurl.com/anocurated

The curated videos are edited from the grammar live stream, with glitches cut out, additional explanations where necessary, etc. They are of varying length, depending on the complexity of the topic, and they focus on answering the questions that you, as channel members, have asked us.

The series is aimed mainly at upper-intermediate to advanced students, as well as teachers who want to be one step ahead when it comes to some of the more complicated areas of English grammar.
