NMMC Election 2022 - Ward reservations draw concluded
MVA pleased, BJP plans to go to court
NAVI MUMBAI

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) on Tuesday conducted draws for civic elections 2022 for Schedule Caste (Women), Schedule Tribe (Women) and Open (Women) categories as per the instructions of State Election Commission (SEC).
The draw was conducted at Vishnudas Bhave auditorium in Vashi for the elections that will for the first time be conducted under the panel system in the city. The draw followed publication of the final ward boundaries in the gazette on May 11.
The civic body which earlier had 111 wards will now have 122 wards. With the panel system introduced, 40 panels will be of 3 wards each and 1 panel of 2 wards.
The draw was conducted in 3 phases in the presence of municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar. A transparent drum was used to store the chits with ward numbers, which were shown to those present. The chits were picked by NMMC school students who were blindfolded.
With 50% of seats being reserved for women in local bodies, 61 wards in Navi Mumbai have been reserved for women. Every panel has a minimum 1 seat and a maximum 2 seats reserved for women.
11 wards with highest SC population in the city have been reserved for the category by SEC. Of these, draw was conducted for 6 seats to be reserved for women.
Similarly, for ST, 2 seats were resereved by SEC, of which draw was conducted for 1 seat for woman candidates.
54 wards were reserved by SEC for women. Of these 40 wards were directly reserved by SEC. Hence lots were drawn from 28 wards for 14 seats on the day.
Said Bangar, “We have concluded the draw process as per the instructions of the SEC in a very transparent manner. The reservations will be published on June 1.”
He added, “The suggestions and objections will be accepted from June 1 to June 6 till 3 pm. They can be submitted to the municipal commissioner at the election office or at the respected ward offices.”
Expressing satisfaction at the conduct of the draw, Shiv Sena leader Vijay Chougule said, “It has been conducted in a very transparent manner after the delimitation exercise which too was as per the norms.”
He added, “We are confident that MVA will win the civic election and we are working towards it irrespective of when the elections are held.”
Former BJP corporator Purshottam Bhoir and Ganesh Naik loyalist, was however not pleased. He said, “Our leadfer had objected to the delimitation exercise which was not fair. The entire process is biased and we will approach the court in the matter.”
