Objects connected to other religions or occult practices.

Exodus 20 verse 3 to 5 – “You shall have no other gods before Me…”


2. Entertainment and Media

Excessive devotion to TV, streaming, music, or video games that glorify ungodliness.

Celebrities or influencers we model our lives after more than the Word of God.


3. Possessions and Materialism

Houses, cars, clothing, and gadgets that consume our focus, pride, or security.

Placing spouse, children, or even a mentor above God’s will or leading.

Luke 14 verse 26 – “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate [i.e., love less] father and mother, wife and children... he cannot be My disciple.”


5. Self and Personal Image

Obsession with appearance, reputation, or personal brand.

Trusting in our own wisdom, talents, or strength instead of depending on God.

2 Timothy 3 verse 2 – “People will be lovers of themselves…”


6. Culture and Tradition

Customs or ancestral practices that override the Word of God.

Secret pacts, rituals, or “family practices” handed down outside of Christ.


7. Unforgiveness or Pain

Holding on to bitterness, vengeance, or trauma as a source of identity.

When pain speaks louder than God’s Word, it becomes an altar in our hearts.


8. Careers and Ambitions

When our job or ministry becomes more important than intimacy with God.

Pursuing success at the cost of obedience.

Idols are anything that takes God’s rightful place in our hearts, minds, or homes. They can be visible or hidden, accepted by society or secret to the family—but the Holy Spirit reveals and calls us to cast them down.
