The Linde-Monash University Sustainability Conference 2026, themed “Shaping Tomorrow’s Energy,”brought together around 400 government, industry and academic participants to discuss practical solutions for Malaysia’s energy transition.

A key highlight was the signing of an MoU between Linde Malaysia and Monash University Malaysia, strengthening collaboration in sustainability research, talent development and industrial decarbonisation.

The conference showcased technologies including hydrogen, CCUS, electrolysers, biomethane, biomass LNG and cleaner combustion solutions, supporting industries in reducing carbon emissions while improving efficiency.

The initiative aligns with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the nation’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Sarawak Tourism Board Completes 10,000-Tree Milestone Ahead of RWMF's 30th Anniversary

EcoGreen Planet Initiative Strengthens Sarawak's Commitment to Sustainable Tourism and Environmental Conservation

SARIKEI, SARAWAK

Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) has successfully fulfilled its 10,000-tree planting commitment under the EcoGreen Planet Initiative, achieving a major sustainability milestone ahead of the 30th Anniversary of the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) in 2027.

The milestone was achieved through the planting of approximately 3,800 mangrove seedlingsat Rajang Mangrove National Park, completing a five-year environmental commitment undertaken in collaboration with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC). The initiative follows previous restoration programmes at Samunsam Wildlife Sanctuary (2023), Bukit Lima Nature Reserve (2024) and Piasau Nature Reserve (2025).

Established under a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2023, the EcoGreen Planet programme supports the carbon-offset and greening commitments of STB's flagship events, including the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) and the Borneo Jazz Festival.

Speaking at the programme, Sarawak Tourism Board Chairman Dato Dennis Ngau described the achievement as an important milestone in the festival's sustainability journey.

"As we look towards the 30th anniversary of the Rainforest World Music Festival, this achievement demonstrates that the festival's legacy is not only measured by the experiences created on stage, but also by the positive impact it leaves behind."

He added that completing the 10,000-tree commitment ahead of the landmark anniversary reinforces STB's responsibility to protect the natural environment that has always been central to the identity of the Rainforest World Music Festival.

The latest restoration project focuses on rehabilitating areas of Rajang Mangrove National Park affected by illegal land clearing between 2020 and 2021. Besides restoring degraded ecosystems, the initiative is expected to enhance carbon sequestration, reduce coastal erosion, strengthen marine biodiversity, support local fisheries, and improve the livelihoods of surrounding riverside communities.

Funding for the 2026 restoration programme came from a portion of RWMF ticket sales, complemented by contributions from corporate sponsors, demonstrating how tourism can directly support environmental conservation and climate action.

The project also brought together multiple stakeholders, including STB, SFC, government agencies, corporate partners, conservation organisations, and the Kampung Kuala Rajangcommunity, whose members will continue to play an important role in the long-term stewardship of the restoration site.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 – Climate Action, the EcoGreen Planet Initiative reflects Sarawak's broader vision of promoting responsible and regenerative tourism, ensuring that major tourism events leave a lasting environmental and community legacy.

As Sarawak prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Rainforest World Music Festival in 2027, the completion of the 10,000-tree commitment further reinforces the state's position as one of the region's leading destinations where tourism, culture and environmental sustainability go hand in hand.

Malaysia Launches National Heritage Initiative Ahead of ICOMOS GA2026 in Sarawak

Malaysia has officially launched the Professional & Institutional Engagement Initiative, marking a major milestone in preparations for the 22nd ICOMOS General Assembly & Scientific Symposium (GA2026), which will take place in Kuching, Sarawak, from 17–24 October 2026.

The initiative brings together Malaysia's leading professional bodies, heritage organisations, universities, conservation experts and civil society under a unified platform to strengthen collaboration in protecting the nation's cultural heritage.

Supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP), the programme reinforces Sarawak's commitment to hosting one of the world's most prestigious cultural heritage gatherings while showcasing Malaysia's rich heritage, sustainable tourism, and international partnerships.

Speaking at the launch, MTCP Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah described the event as a significant milestone for both Sarawak and Malaysia.

He said the General Assembly presents an opportunity to showcase Sarawak's living heritage and cultural diversity while strengthening international cooperation, professional knowledge exchange and long-term partnerships in heritage conservation.

Meanwhile, ICOMOS Malaysia President Faisal Abd Rahman said Malaysia aims to make GA2026 more than just an international conference.

According to him, the event is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build lasting partnerships that promote heritage conservation, interdisciplinary collaboration and greater public appreciation of the country's shared cultural legacy.

He also emphasised that heritage conservation today requires close cooperation between architects, archaeologists, planners, engineers, universities, government agencies and local communities.

The General Assembly is expected to welcome more than 1,500 delegates from over 130 countries, making it one of the largest international heritage gatherings ever hosted in Malaysia.

GA2026 will also commemorate UNESCO's 80th Anniversary through a series of exhibitions, public programmes and community engagement activities aimed at inspiring greater awareness of cultural heritage.

The event has received official recognition from the National Heritage Department as a programme of national importance.

Among the organisations supporting the initiative are Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM), the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP), the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Malaysian Urban Design Association (PEREKABANDAR), Ikatan Ahli Arkeologi Malaysia, Badan Warisan Malaysia, Penang Heritage Trust, Perak Heritage Society, Sarawak Heritage Society, together with many other professional and heritage organisations.

The Professional & Institutional Engagement Initiative aims to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, encourage knowledge sharing and inspire Malaysians to recognise that preserving cultural heritage is a shared national responsibility.

SOUTHEAST ASIAN CREATIVE CITIES STRENGTHEN TIES THROUGH RENEWED REGIONAL MOU IN KUALA LUMPUR


KUALA LUMPUR, 18 November 2025 - Creative leaders from across Southeast Asia have renewed the Southeast Asian Creative Cities Network (SEACCN) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reinforcing a stronger, unified regional commitment to advance creativity-led urban development and boost Southeast Asia’s global competitiveness.
Hosted by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Think City and officiated by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), YBhg. Dato' Shaharuddin bin Abu Sohot, the November 15 signing brought together four national level organisations that advocate and drive their cities’ creative economy agendas.
The signatories were Malaysia’s Think City (represented by Managing Director, YBhg. Dato' Hamdan Abdul Majeed), Thailand’s Creative Economy Agency (Senior Specialist, Ms. Montinee Yongvikul), Indonesia Creative Cities Network (Executive Committee, Ms Dwinita Larasati), and the Creative Economy Council of the Philippines (President & Founder, Mr Paolo Mercado).
The renewal comes at a time of rising momentum for the region, reflected in Kuala Lumpur’s recent designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Design.
In his launching address, Shaharuddin described the renewed MoU as a meaningful step forward for South-East Asia’s creative ecosystem.
“In Malaysia, culture and creativity have long been central to our national identity. From the richness of our tradition to the vibrancy of our creative industry, these sectors have shaped how we see ourselves, how we express who we are and how we connect with the rest of the world,” he said.
Hamdan echoed the importance of unified regional action, noting that Southeast Asian cities face similar urban and social challenges and stand to gain significantly from deeper collaboration. He noted that cities across the region are rediscovering the power of culture and creativity, not just as soft assets but as strategic drivers of regeneration, identity and resilience.
“Here in Kuala Lumpur, the Warisan Kuala Lumpur initiative, launched by Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is reigniting interest in our historical and cultural heart. It’s in this context that we warmly congratulate Kuala Lumpur on its recent designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Design,” he said.
The renewed MoU sets out a shared mission for Southeast Asian cities that recognise creativity as a driver of sustainability and community well-being. It focuses on placing culture and creativity at the centre of urban regeneration and economic development, strengthening the creation and exchange of cultural content, nurturing ecosystems that elevate creative talent, promoting wider access to culture and embedding creativity within city and regional policies.


To achieve this, SEACCN will concentrate on six key action areas: knowledge exchange; joint regional projects; exchanges involving artists, academics and policymakers; research and evaluation; policy support; and public awareness.
The MoU aims to expand membership to include more cities – especially those aspiring to develop creativity-driven urban agendas and welcomes partners across sectors who share an interest in cultural and creative development.
Thailand's Montinee Yongvikul said the renewal of the MoU was timely as there is growing acceptance from governments in the region on the importance of the creative economy.
"This MoU will further enhance collaboration to elevate culture, design and creativity as drivers of prosperity," she said.
The Philippines' Paolo Mercado concurred. "We are a region of more than 600 million people, yet we have not fully unlocked our collaborative strength. Southeast Asia’s creative scene has long been a hidden gem," he said.
Meanwhile, illustrating how local wins potentially feed into regional progress, Dwinita Larasati shared the Indonesian experience in ensuring creative cities thrive. “In Bandung, the non-governmental organisations (NGOs), academia and creative practitioners successfully pushed to get the Creative Economy Bill passed. That was a win as it set a legal baseline for the creative economy,” she said.
Founded in 2014, SEACCN started off as a regional platform for cities in the region to collaborate at a time when the creative economy was not yet widely recognised as part of national development. Over the past decade, cities in the network have shared best practices, co-hosted festivals and design weeks and introduced creative urbanism programmes that addressed local social, economic and environmental needs.
Today, with more Southeast Asian governments embracing creativity as a driver of growth, the renewed MoU positions the region to move forward with stronger alignment, deeper cooperation and a unified voice on the global stage.
