I did a brief "Behind the Simlish" exploration with my "Reverse Engineering Simlish" video, but never a full breakdown of my method for transcribing Simlish VS Jackie Perez Gratz's (The Simlish song translator at Maxis) method for translating songs into Simlish. Are our methods similar? How do they differ? 🤔 I'll also explore how learning Simlish enabled me to translate over 5 Simlish-only songs into English! There are over 10 interviews from Maxis & EA about Simlish, Simlish songs, and translating songs into Simlish! Sul sul GG's groupies and everyone! Something amazing is going to happen this Juneteenth (June 19th, 2026). It will officially be my 20th anniversary on YouTube! 🤩 It turns out that my channel is one of the oldest accounts on YouTube! I hadn't realized this until someone responded to one of my comments on a Japanese video about Simlish. YouTube began in February 2005. A year later, I made my channel! My first ever video is my dedication to my favorite character of all time: Grencia Mars Elijah Guo Eckener from Cowboy Bebop! Thus, my username is GRENgoddess. My early videos are me playing a range of casual games that many people tend to overlook. Then I started making videos about skillgaming (making money in daily video game cash tournaments). In fact, this year will also be my 20th anniversary of being a cash/professional gamer! That will happen this September. In 2015, I made a video announcing my new business Premium Puzzles, where I put puzzles together, save them, frame them, then sell them as wall art/decor for your home or office! You can click on the STORE button on my YouTube channel to see them! They came out beautifully. 🥰 Then I took a break from making videos for a while before making my first-ever Simlish lyric video in August 2022! So much has happened in 20 years! BEHIND THE LYRICS - HERO By The Humble Brothers - My English translation ^__^

The whole song sounds ethereal, as if someone from another dimension or plane of existence was singing it. This is where I got the idea that this was a ghost sim speaking. In each of The Sims games, when your sims die, they can become ghosts and haunt wherever their remains are placed. In The Sims 4, you can actually PLAY as a ghost sim, but in The Sims 2, ghosts have limited interactions with living sims. So I thought, what if a ghost sim was desperately trying to communicate with their living loved ones about the sacrifice of his own life? They mourn his death but don't recognize the sacrifices he made for them in both life AND death? That's what this song sounds like to me.

IRL, it would be us here in the present, never recognizing the sacrifices civil rights leaders, our ancestors, lost loved ones, human rights advocates made for us so that the quality of life would be better for our present (their future). Are they trying to communicate with us but are unable to interact? Are they speaking to us through song, the only universal platform? They are our heroes, but we don't even know them, recognize them, or know their names. Why is that? Let's explore!

MY TRANSLATION

Lost in time, lots were killed...lots are so outta time.

The curse of being alive...

Forgive myself of the sin...forgetting those who have died

And fought to save our lives!

^--- Meaning in SimNation - He was a sim who is now dead and only "exists" as a ghost. Forever "lost in time" with limited interaction with the real world. So many other sims were killed, including him, and he knows many other sims are out of time too (even if they don't realize it). He remembers what it was like being alive. The constant fear, sacrifice, pain, injustice, and does NOT miss it at all being a ghost. Being alive was a curse, and he does not want to come back, BUT there are some tradeoffs...He remembers his great sin when he was alive, of not recognizing the sacrifices made for him so he (and others) could live. Forgetting and not recognizing all those who have died and fought to save his life, our lives, and the future! This is his origin story as a HERO. He wanted to rectify that sin by being a hero and making similar sacrifices for his loved ones, other sims, and the world while he was alive.

Meaning in the real world - He is alive but feels like he is lost in time. He doesn't really fit into the present world and cannot find his place in it. He sees so many people being killed around him. So many people with so little time. Being denied healthcare, everything in life is becoming unnecessarily expensive due to capitalism, MORE false wars ( by Israel & the USA) for power & dominance at our expense! NO ONE wants this. This world has become unbearable. This is not normal. It feels like we are all lost in time, stuck in a horrible timeline we cannot escape from! Truly, it is a curse to be alive right now, and he knows it. He also feels bad about not properly recognizing the sacrifices made in the past by unnamed/unsung heroes, civil rights activists, unions, and warriors for global social justice! Now that he realizes this, he wants to rectify the sin of ignoring their sacrifice by making sacrifices of his own. The heroes of the past have inspired him to be a hero in the present!

I fought for the silenced and the dead...

(Time after time... give up. It's alright, they'll be fine...)

^---- SimNation meaning - In his afterlife, he begins to reflect on all that he fought for, sacrificed, and DIED for. Who better to fight for than sims who cannot speak for themselves, whether they are silenced or a ghost like he is? Such sims can never make their voices heard. But in the back of his mind, he regrets some of those choices and sacrifices. Maybe if he did nothing, they would be fine anyway? So the dark whispering voice in his head tells him he should have given up. That everything is fine. Why bother making sacrifices, time after time? Things will always work out. The world will always self-correct, will always turn in favor of the good, right? So this brings on the fear of, " Was it worth it?" This leads him to WANT recognition for his sacrifices. Will he be known as a hero for what he did? Will other sims recognize the sacrifices he made for them? They mourn his death at his gravestone but don't recognize the SACRIFICE of his death and what it means...So the dark voice in his head tries to make him feel better for this selfish need for glory. It isn't wrong to help others for glory, right? Give it time, that glory will come. It's alright, and it is fine to want that glory, right?

IRL meaning - Now that he is on the path to being a hero, inspired by the heroes of the past, he begins looking for people who need a hero. Who else better than those who cannot speak for themselves? Who died or were killed before they could? Like the people being killed in Gaza and Iran right now by Israel & the USA. Those who are purposely being silenced or censored, like the victims of the Epstein class, victims of rape & abuse, those speaking out against the injustices of the world. Fascism has clearly taken hold. Conservatives, nazis, zionists, capitalists, billionaires, and white supremacists are taking over all media to silence dissent and different points of view globally! Surely, the silenced (whether alive or dead) are the best people to fight for! They need a hero. As a man (especially a white man), he has a special privilege to BE that hero. No one would expect it, and he could get away with more to protect those in need. He would not be seen as an immediate threat because of his male and white privilege together! So he fought and continues to fight for the silenced and the dead, but there is a thought in the back of his mind that maybe his sacrifices so far have been a waste. We are still living in a horribly cruel world. Everything that he did already, did it make a difference? So the dark whisper voice in the back of his mind is telling him to stop fighting. To just give up. It won't make a difference. Why bother? Believe in the system. Believe in humanity. The system will always self-correct, right? 🤔🙄People are inherently good and don't enable evil, right? 🤔🙄These doubts and regrets have pushed him to want some form of recognition, some glory for the sacrifices he has already made. Would a hero want that? Maybe not, but HE does. Something...ANYTHING that shows his sacrifices weren't a total waste. So the dark whisper in the back of his mind is trying to reassure him that it isn't selfish to want this. That in time, glory will come. That it is perfectly fine to want BOTH: to help others and glory/recognition for doing so.

Lost in time, I forget lots are so outta time. It's such a lonely life...

The tyranny of distractions...we forget all the time and cannot save our lives!

^----- BOTH - The Simlish repeats the same verse again, but I felt compelled to translate it differently this time. That it should show progress in his hero's journey and emotional journey as he continues on this path. The translation shouldn't be the same because HE isn't the same as he was in the beginning.

SimNation meaning - He is still lost in time as a ghost watching the world around him and not being able to interact with it. At times, he is so consumed with his afterlife that he forgets that there are living sims who are out of time and could die too. I mean, a watcher can suddenly decide to lure a sim into a pool and remove the ladder. You just DON'T KNOW how much time anyone has left. Knowing this, while not being able to do anything about it as a ghost, is a painful "existence." It is beyond lonely. In the beginning of the song, he recognized his own sin of ignoring sims from the past who made sacrifices so he and other sims could live. He forgot and ignored previous sims who died and fought to save his and others' lives, only to become just like them. A hero, who is now forgotten and ignored by his living loved ones, who refuse to recognize the significance of his death. Oh, the irony. As a ghost, he cannot tell them or warn them that they are making the same mistake he did when he was alive. Even if he WAS alive, would they pay attention to him at all? All his fellow sims seem to be utterly distracted with TV, grilled cheese, and just the dumbest things! The tyranny of distraction. These sims are too distracted to even save their OWN lives!

IRL meaning - He still feels he doesn't have a place in the present world. After his regrets and doubts in the first part, he inspires himself to get back to the path of being a hero...
