Moldy Enemy glow ups! ✨️ We want to share with you what goes into upgrading the enemy designs for Foodomina!

There were a few things we wanted to upgrade with the designs that also help with battle animations:
☄️ WAY better silhouettes that make the enemies stand out. With more interesting poses, there's more opportunity for animation!
☄️ Vibrant, bold colour combos. One of Foodomina's artistic pillars is its vibrancy. The whimsy fantasy aspects of our game thrive on bright colours. It makes the Food characters look all the more tasty & impactful... and the Mold kind of nuclear & dangerous looking! Especially with the neon palettes 💜🌟
☄️Consistent uniforms & worldbuilding. The style & rules for Moldian uniforms & classes. Sooo... updating the designs was necessary. We want to give you passionate gamers who love all the little details, more things to notice about the worldbuilding 👀

PART 2 ‼️ The inspirations behind our RPG, Foodomina! ✨

▶️ Environmental Direction:
Foodomina's visuals are created by a self-taught pixel artist, and with that in mind Chef RPG's developer Pixel Architect had such valuable learning content in his devlogs. His approach to environments and level design was less conventional to what most beginner pixel artist pipelines indicate. Many RPG's environments are built with tile maps, but something about Foodomina's vision and incorporating food into every aspect, made it difficult to execute with tiles! 🍩 🍕 🍰
Chef RPG will always be a visual study we're grateful for, as it showed us the visual possibilities that can be achieved, even by one artist, and without dependence on tile maps!🖌️ ✨

▶️ Foodomina's Mold Species:
The surface level definition of Mold in Foodomina is 'Alien invasion + Zombie Apocalypse'... However, the inspiration of Mold draws from a vast array of media, and is as diverse as our cuisine inspiration for Foodians! Much of what makes Moldians such an interesting and complex species design behind the scenes is our vision to lean into hive-mind, clairvoyance, and body horror!
We pull a lot of inspiration from the microscopic biology of Mold, and blend that with the cosmos. 🦠🌌 The sound palette for Mold is almost exclusively synth-based, to make them distinct from Foodians as artificial, inhuman, and corrupt. 👾
But there is a lot more to them beneath the surface. If you have seen our Mold biology infographics, then you know just how seriously we take the parasitic corruption of Foodians, and what it means to be Mold! 💜

The inspirations behind our RPG, Foodomina! ✨

▶️ The Origin of Foodomina:
The very source of the idea and premise stemmed from our favourite childhood media, Super Mario Galaxy, and Steven Universe! Between the two, you have an engrossing, morally complex story explored metaphorically through personified inanimate objects (gems) in a fantasy space setting!🌌 🍩 🍕
Foodomina follows a similar creative set-up, with it's game design and progression taking influecne from classic turn-based RPGs

▶️ Foodomina's Combat & the Present:
As we continued to develop Foodomina's story we took inspiration from more modernised RPG's that have unique approaches to turn-based combat, and most notably Toby Fox's games! Undertale introduced a subversive exploration of violence in RPGs, and we realised the Food vs Mold conflict in our game was more complex and unnerving than we initially thought... needing a similar morally concious exploration like Undertale‼️
The incorporation of Bullet-hell we realised was something we wanted to pull from, and did research into any and all games that have bullet-hell to see how we can tailor it to the needs of our world! 🦠
Safe to say, we really REALLY like our combat and Mold enemies! It's the perfect balance of familiar (to inspired games), with unique twists that feel right just for our antagonists! ✨

Dialogue Animations GLOW UPS! ✨️
A lot of you haven't seen the original animation overhaul... so we're showing you how much has changed! Foodomina's art is created by a self-taught pixel artist, and so much learning can happen just within a couple years... so a revmap was needed!

Compared to our old sprites, there's a lot of things that have changed about our animation/rendering approach.
Here is what's changed!:
☄️ The sprites are smaller- We decided to go with slightly smaller renders, to allow for more space on screen for gameplay & cutscenes! In the old sprites, the head to body ratio was closer to chibi proportions!
☄️ Expanded the sprite- In the old sprites, the character cut off abruptly at the waist, making them awkwardly hover in the air... now we render more than half their body! This way, you get to see more of their design ✨
☄️Pre-planned rendering- In the previous part, we suggested planning your shading/lighting in your sketch phase before you move to rendering, to give you a better idea of where to apply more detail. This also helps rendering stay consistent between characters! In the old sprites, shading was just applied wherever made sense in the moment and didn't have a consistent flow.
