📢 RBI Official Clarification on Exchange of Soiled & Mutilated Currency Notes
There is a lot of confusion among the public about whether torn, soiled, or damaged currency notes can be exchanged in banks.
📜 As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines:
Banks must exchange soiled notes (dirty due to normal wear & tear).
Mutilated notes are also eligible for exchange, subject to RBI’s Note Refund Rules, 2009.
Up to 20 notes or ₹5,000 per day can be exchanged free of charge over the counter.
For bulk submissions, banks may credit the amount later as per procedure.
This is an official RBI statement, not an opinion or assumption.
