Decca’s iconic 1960 recording of Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus began with a bold idea: a gala-style recording where Vienna Opera stars “dropped in” to Prince Orlofsky’s party. Thanks to Decca’s star-studded roster from Birgit Nilsson to Mario del Monaco and a young Leontyne Price, the team created the most captivating Fledermaus ever made. Produced by John Culshaw with all his customary sonic flair, it remains a unique snapshot of a vanished Viennese age: deccaclassics.lnk.to/Fledermaus

Everyone at Decca Classics was deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Christoph Von Dohnányi on Saturday. We send our condolences to his wife Barbara and the family.

Dohnányi created a vast recorded legacy with his beloved Cleveland and Vienna Philharmonic orchestras. He was also a powerful and articulate advocate for the place of orchestras and classical music in society; something which his wartime childhood had impressed deeply upon him. We mourn his loss but celebrate an extraordinary life in music.
