Sri Harilal W. Poonja, or Papaji, as he is affectionately known, was an Indian sage and jivanmukta (liberated being) who embodied and taught Self-enquiry. His own Guru was Ramana Maharishi. The heart of self-inquiry is the question: Who AM I? that helps many people realize the truth of their being.
Papaji wanted recordings of Satsangs and books to be made available all over the world. The Avadhuta Foundation was established in 1993 and given copyrights by Papaji himself. The foundation is dedicated to preserve Papaji’s message as accurately and purely as possible.

Learning all the Vedas, all the sutras, like a parrot is not going to help you. No gift, austerity or charity is going to help you. More important than anything is the burning desire for freedom. This alone is enough. If you have this burning desire you will be led to satsang, which means to stay quiet, to still the mind, to bring it back to the center wherever it goes. Either do it by yourself or search for a perfected teacher, but do not go astray from the longing to be free.

Be vigilant of the present circumstances. This is quite enough to give you happiness. Don't let the mind run to concepts which will trick and disturb you. Look to where the mind runs. Do this without taking any steps. Just watch the mind's activity: where it goes, what it wants. Be careful, day and night, whether you are meditating or in the marketplace.

Emptiness is surrounding everything, past, present, future. All the cosmos, all the solar systems are included in this emptiness."

I immediately felt a great attraction to him, even though I didn’t know anything about his teachings. I simply fell in love with his beautiful face and decided that I should try to emulate him. I began to sit in a cross-legged position in our garden under some rose bushes. Sitting there, I felt happy and content that I was harmonising my lifestyle with this person I had fallen in love with.
