Well….this blows.
Unfortunately earlier today, while I was in the middle of doing some VHS related experiments, one of my iconic “Rare Closing” tapes snapped off completely after I rewound it in my two-way rewinder.
Now this doesn’t really surprise me at all considering this tape is very old and was very well used, and also because these older RCA tapes from this era tend to do this, but still.
And unfortunately, because it has a different type of screw in the middle, there’s no easy way to fix it. So essentially, this tape is officially dead, after 13+ long years of me owning it.
Quite a shame, especially since I’ve done a rare closing video on this tape, twice now, and also I’ve used footage from this tape for some of my old Homemade VHS Tapes, for those who remember those, but like I said, considering its age and condition, it was pretty much inevitable.
R.I.P. to this iconic “Rare Closing” VHS.
I’m gonna most likely try to replace this with a CTHV reprint copy, (which I was gonna eventually do anyway, so no big deal).

AWESOME NEWS:
So late last night, I decided, on a whim, to finally fix the NHL Overtime VHS.
As it had turned out, what had happened was, the two small plastic pieces that hold the metal spring in place had broken off at some point, and as such, the metal spring was basically unsalvageable. There’s a chance it may have still worked even without that piece, but I refused to take the chance with that.
So, what I did instead was, I did a little bit of tape shell swapping. I put the film for this tape into the shell for my retail VHS copy of “Touched By An Angel: A Christmas Miracle” (which I technically don’t really need anymore, as I now have that awesome screener copy, but I’m still keeping both anyway), and then took the film for that tape and put it into the shell for a spare VHS of “Casper: A Spirited Beginning” that I had. (It was a leftover tape from one of the old Punk Nerd unboxings, as you may remember). And then I put the original lids for both tapes onto the new shells, so that they would still have the original week and year codes. (All 3 tapes used in this experiment had the same design, so the lids were essentially interchangeable).
So now this tape has a completely new shell, and it has been tested and works perfectly! And I still get to keep my “Touched By An Angel: A Christmas Miracle” retail VHS!
Very awesome that I was able to salvage this tape! Even more awesome that I happened to have two other extra tapes with the exact same tape design as this tape, which allowed me to keep the original lid, with the original W&Y code!
Oh, and on a random side note, the 1994 Winter Olympics Figure Skating Competition Highlights VHS, despite being printed in early 94, and having a faded barcode, actually had nothing at the end! Very surprised to see that!
