Há cerca de três semanas, quando estava a terminar de ver o episódio 7 da excelente série "Pluribus", apareceu no fim esta versão portuguesa da canção "Aquarius/ Let the sun shine in" pela cantora portuguesa Maro. Adorei esta versão, com a suavidade mística a que a Maro já nos habituou, e achei que seria canção perfeita para partilhar com vocês nestes dias em que se aproxima um novo ano, e em que o Mundo parece, mais do que nunca, precisar de ouvir e de refletir sobre estas palavras. De resto, "Harmonia, entendimento / Empatia abundante / Sem mentira ou engano / Sonhos de ouro e visões / E outras libertações" é o melhor que posso desejar a cada um de vocês. Obrigada por estarem aí desse lado, e estaremos de volta brevemente para mais música, língua e cultura portuguesa. Um beijinho a todos,

About three weeks ago, when I was finishing watching episode 7 of the excellent series “Pluribus,” this Portuguese version of the song “Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In” by Portuguese singer Maro appeared at the end. I loved this version, with the mystical softness that Maro has accustomed us to, and I thought it would be the perfect song to share with you in these days as a new year approaches, and when the world seems, more than ever, to need to hear and reflect on these words. Este poderia ser apenas um post a avisar que tenho um novo video no YouTube, mas é bem mais do que isso.



Sempre ouvi dizer que o Natal é, entre outras coisas, partilha, e por isso hoje quero também partilhar com vocês a pequena aventura que foi produzir este vídeo.



Normalmente, quando gravo videos, estou em casa, o que é altamente rentável porque normalmente gravo mais do que um vídeo - da última vez gravei três videos numa tarde -, mas a verdade é que, apesar de eu ser uma pessoa tímida, aquilo que eu gosto mais é mesmo de ir para a rua, e estar, falar e interagir com pessoas. E gravar este vídeo foi uma ocasião cheio de situações que me deixaram de coração cheio.



Depois de cerca de uma hora de viagem de comboio e metro, quando saí do metro no Chiado, decidi que iria gravar a parte inicial a descer a Rua do Carmo. Não tinha decidido antes, foi mesmo na altura. Depois de cerca de 15 minutos de "luta" com o meu gimbal, pensei qualquer coisa como "Ainda nem comecei a filmar e já estou cansada" 🤣 mas isso foi porque eu não sabia o quanto me iria sentir compensada pelo que viria a seguir.



Depois de filmar no Terreiro do Paço, onde está a enorme árvore de Natal, fui para a Praça da Figueira, que fica mesmo ao lado do Rossio, e é onde ficam as lojas que visitei. A primeira foi o Hospital das Bonecas, que é mesmo literalmente um sítio onde se arranjam bonecas e tem também um museu e loja. O objetivo era não só dar a conhecer esta loja centenária, mas também filmar um pequeno diálogo em que peço para embrulhar a minha compra. Quando expliquei à senhora da loja o que queria fazer, ela disponibilizou-se imediatamente para aparecer no vídeo, explicando que há estava habituada porque é muito comum a televisão e pessoas particulares quererem filmar. Foi um início em cheio que me encheu de confiança, porque estava com receio da reação das pessoas que trabalham nas lojas. A fotografia deste post é exatamente desta interação que vocês podem ver no vídeo.



Depois, foi a vez de visitar a Manteigaria e Bacalhoaria Silva, onde comprei caras de bacalhau. Fui recebida com alguma curiosidade e simpatia. No fim, antes de me ir embora, o senhor que me atendeu disse-me qualquer coisa como "Foi um prazer vê-la", deixando-me com a impressão de que se lembrava de mim de outras ocasiões. E a verdade é que a minha história com as lojas centenárias já é longa- mas essa é uma história que vou deixar para outra ocasião 😉



Quase no fim da minha pequena aventura, dirigi-me à Confeitaria Nacional, onde me filmei a mim mesma a pedir um bolo rei enquanto a senhora simpática e cheia de boa vontade que me atendia tentava controlar a sua vontade de rir, e acabou por ser um momento que acabou com nós as duas a rir depois de terminar a filmagem.

Já no fim, no Mercado de Natal do Rossio, estava eu novamente à luta com o meu gimbal, quando uma rapariga nova que estava lá também a fazer filmagens se ofereceu para me ajudar. Chegámos à conclusão de que estava mesmo sem bateria. E ela também me disse que trabalhar com o gimbal leva algum tempo até a pessoa se habituar, o que foi bom porque fez-me sentir muito menos idiota 🤣



E agora que estou a acabar de escrever este post, estou já a pensar em como posso fazer para tornar este tipo de vídeos mais frequente. Porque gosto mesmo de fazer isto.

This could just be a post to let you know that I have a new video on YouTube, but it's much more than that.

I've always heard that Christmas is, among other things, about sharing, so today I also want to share with you the little adventure that was producing this video.

Usually, when I record videos, I'm at home, which is highly cost-effective because I usually record more than one video—last time I recorded three videos in one afternoon—but the truth is that, even though I'm a shy person, what I like most is going out, being out and about, talking and interacting with people. And recording this video was an occasion full of heartwarming situations.

After about an hour's journey by train and subway, when I got off the subway at Chiado, I decided that I would record the opening part walking down Rua do Carmo. I hadn't decided beforehand, it was just a spur-of-the-moment decision. After about 15 minutes of “struggling” with my gimbal, I thought something like, “I haven't even started filming yet and I'm already tired” 🤣 but that was because I didn't know how much I would feel rewarded by what was to come.

After filming at Terreiro do Paço, where the huge Christmas tree is, I went to Praça da Figueira, which is right next to Rossio, and that's where the shops I visited are located. The first was Hospital das Bonecas, which is literally a place where dolls are repaired and also has a museum and shop. The goal was not only to promote this century-old store, but also to film a short dialogue in which I ask for my purchase to be wrapped. When I explained to the lady in the shop what I wanted to do, she immediately agreed to appear in the video, explaining that she was used to it because it is very common for television and private individuals to want to film. It was a great start that filled me with confidence, because I was afraid of the reaction of the people who work in the shops. The photo in this post is exactly from this interaction, which you can see in the video.

Then it was time to visit Manteigaria e Bacalhoaria Silva, where I bought some codfish. I was greeted with curiosity and friendliness. In the end, before I left, the gentleman who served me said something like, “It was a pleasure to see you,” leaving me with the impression that he remembered me from other occasions. And the truth is that my history with century-old stores is already a long one—but that's a story I'll leave for another time 😉

Nearing the end of my little adventure, I headed to Confeitaria Nacional, where I filmed myself ordering a king cake while the friendly and helpful lady who served me tried to control her urge to laugh, and it ended up being a moment that had us both laughing after we finished filming.

At the end, at the Rossio Christmas Market, I was once again struggling with my gimbal when a young girl who was also filming there. She offered to help me. We came to the conclusion that my battery was really dead. She also told me that working with the gimbal takes some time to get used to, which was good because it made me feel much less stupid 🤣

And now that I'm finishing writing this post, I'm already thinking about how I can make these kinds of videos more often. Because I really enjoy doing this.

E pronto! Parece que estou oficialmente de férias. Mas, antes de ir, quero só partilhar com vocês o que têm sido as últimas semanas deste projeto: para além de um novo vídeo a sair brevemente, estou a começar agora a criar cursos. O primeiro, que podem ver nesta imagem, é um mini curso intensivo e vai sair em setembro. Estou muito ansiosa por poder partilhá-lo com vocês!

É verdade! Faz hoje exatamente um ano que o Português Through Music se tornou uma realidade no Youtube e nas redes sociais!
Foi um ano de muitas aprendizagens, muitas descobertas, algumas conquistas, mas sobretudo… muita diversão!
Até me custa a acreditar que já passou um ano. E eu costumo pensar que, quando o tempo passa assim tão depressa, é porque estamos muito ocupados ou a divertir-nos… e neste caso são as duas coisas!
E faço questão de assinalar a data e de te agradecer a ti, que estás aí desse lado a contribuir para que este projeto seja uma realidade. E o meu desejo é que esta ocasião se repita por muitos anos, e que sejamos muitos, e cada vez mais!

It's true! Exactly one year ago today, Português Through Music became a reality on YouTube and social media!
It's been a year of a lot of learning, a lot of discoveries, some achievements, but above all... a lot of fun!
It's hard to believe it's already been a year. And I usually think that when time passes so quickly, it's because we're either very busy or having fun... and in this case it's both!
And I'm keen to mark the date and thank you, who are there helping to make this project a reality. And my wish is that this occasion will be repeated for many years to come, and that there will be many of us, and more and more!

Enquanto estava a preparar o próximo vídeo, tirei esta selfie com cravos vermelhos, que são símbolo da revolução que aconteceu no dia 25 de abril de 1974, e que livrou Portugal da ditadura que durava já há 50 anos. Comprei 10 cravos vermelhos e recebi, como uma espécie de promoção, algumas histórias contadas pela senhora que me vendeu as flores. Contou-me que estava na Baixa no dia da revolução e de como os militares dirigiam as operações. Sim, ela esteve lá nesse dia mágico! Contou-me também de como uma pessoa conhecida dela entrou um dia numa frutaria onde havia bananas a apodrecer e reclamou por isso porque havia tantas pessoas com fome, e de como o dono da loja lhe advertiu que se calasse porque estavam lá agentes da PIDE, e assim ajudando-o a evitar ir preso. Sim, porque durante a ditadura não se podia dizer absolutamente nada. Contou-me também outra história de como uma outra pessoa sua conhecida entrou, por acidente, num sítio onde estavam presos alguns homens todos nus a tremer de frio e com água a cair em cima deles. Sim, a tortura que tantos sofreram. E há tantas histórias assim a circular por aí. Foi aquela senhora como podia ser qualquer outra. E, no fim disto tudo, lamentou-se de haver agora pessoas que não valorizam a liberdade que têm e que parecem querer voltar atrás no tempo. E eu saí da loja a pensar que deve ter sido reconfortante para ela ver uma pessoa que foi à sua loja comprar 10 cravos vermelhos, essas flores tão simbólicas da liberdade conquistada e agora tão negligenciada. E é por isso que, agora mais do que nunca, é tão importante festejar o 25 de abril e lembrar o porquê de esta revolução ter acontecido. De queixo erguido e punhos no ar!
25 de abril, sempre! Fascismo, nunca mais!



While I was preparing the next video, I took this selfie with red carnations, which are a symbol of the revolution that took place on April 25, 1974, and which freed Portugal from the dictatorship that had lasted for 50 years. I bought 10 red carnations and received, as a kind of promotion, some stories from the lady who sold me the flowers. She told me how she was in Baixa on the day of the revolution and how the military were running the operations. Yes, she was there in that magical day! She also told me how someone she knew once went into a fruit store where there were rotting bananas and complained about it because there were so many hungry people, and how the store owner warned him to shut up because there were PIDE agents there, thus helping him to avoid being arrested. Yes, because during the dictatorship you couldn't say anything at all. She also told me another story about how someone she knew accidentally walked into a place where some men were being held, all naked and shivering, with water falling on them. Yes, the torture that so many suffered. And there are so many stories like that going around. It was that lady, just as it could have been anyone else. And at the end of it all, she lamented that there are now people who don't value the freedom they have and who seem to want to turn back the clock. And I left the store thinking that it must have been comforting for her to see a person who came into her store to buy 10 red carnations, those flowers that are so symbolic of the freedom that was won and is now so neglected.
And that's why, now more than ever, it's so important to celebrate April 25 and remember why this revolution happened. Chin up and fists in the air!
April 25, always! Fascism, never again!

Provavelmente a maior parte de vocês não sabe disto, mas antes de este projeto ser uma realidade no Youtube e nas redes sociais, o Português Through Music já era uma realidade na Saudade Language School, onde organizei o primeiro workshop em julho de 2022. Outros dois se seguiram e o próximo vai ser já dia 14 às 17h. É uma verdadeira parceria da qual me sinto muito orgulhosa e grata, e é com muito prazer e muita alegria que vou levar este projeto a passar um belo fim de tarde “em casa”.

Desta vez, propomos um olhar sobre as canções portuguesas de intervenção com foco na mulher e no seu papel na sociedade portuguesa.

Desde o seu início, as canções portuguesas de intervenção trouxeram consigo uma poderosa mensagem de mudança social – incluindo a emancipação da mulher como uma parte fundamental de uma sociedade mais moderna e justa.

O que iremos fazer
- Descobrir canções icónicas que dão destaque às mulheres e ao seu papel na sociedade portuguesa
- Expandir conhecimentos sobre a história e cultura portuguesa, aprendendo sobre as origens da canção de intervenção, o seu impacto cultural e a sua ligação às mudanças sociais
- Aprender português através da música: trabalhar a gramática, o vocabulário, a pronúncia e debater brevemente temas relacionados com as canções.

Condições de participação
Preço: 15 euros para alunos da Saudade School | 20 euros para outros participantes.

Most of you probably don't know this, but before this project became a reality on Youtube and social media, Portuguese Through Music was already a reality at Saudade Language School, where I organized the first workshop in July 2022. Two more followed and the next one is coming up on the 14th at 5pm. It's a true partnership of which I'm very proud and grateful, and it's with great pleasure and joy that I'm going to take this project to spend a lovely evening “at home”.


This time, we're taking a look at Portuguese intervention songs with a focus on women and their role in Portuguese society.

Since their very beginning, Portuguese intervention songs have carried a powerful message of social change - including the emancipation of women as a key part of a more modern and just society.

What we'll be doing
- Discover iconic songs that highlight women and their role in Portuguese society
- Expand knowledge of Portuguese history and culture, learning about the origins of the intervention song, its cultural impact and its link to social change
- Learn Portuguese through music: work on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and briefly discuss subjects related to the songs.

Conditions of participation
Price: 15 euros for Saudade School students | 20 euros for other participants.
