⚠️DISCUSSIONS OF PHYSICAL/MENTAL ABUSE AHEAD⚠️
As for the piece!! There are actually a few main symbols: 1) the shattered side, 2) the tape over the mouth, and 3) the chains!!
In my story, there's a recurring theme of abuse, which is in a LOT of the character's backstories. I chose Ash as the focal point because he IS the main character and the symbols make the most sense with him.
The shattered glass represents the strain the abuse puts on Ash. Every hit/insult from his dad is like a crack forming, and the longer the abuse went on, the more cracks that formed. It's basically Ash slowly breaking from the weight of the trauma.
The tape over the mouth is a simple message, but it shows how difficult/dangerous it is for abuse victims to speak up about their situation. In Ash's specific case, his dad is the abuser, so it's even more difficult since it's family. Plus, he doesn't want people to judge him or think he's weak, so he feels like he can't speak up about it.
And finally, we have the chains. These symbolize how Ash is "trapped" and can't break free. Since he was a minor during the abuse, there wasn't really anywhere he could go, so he was was "chained down" and stuck.
(There's also a mini symbol, which is the eyes in the glass. They show Ash's social anxiety/feeling like everyone is judging him for the abuse)!!
All in all, this piece was a lot of fun to make and took a lot of thought!! I think the end result could be cleaner and more cohesive, but I'm not mad at it!
