The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) works to serve California veterans and their families by connecting them with their earned benefits through education, advocacy, and direct services.
The California State Approving Agency for Veterans Education (CSAAVE) program is protecting the educational benefits of veterans in the Golden State. CSAAVE is responsible for the review, evaluation, approval, and oversight of schools and training facilities, to ensure state and federal quality criteria are met for veterans using their GI Bill funds. CSAAVE is an advocate for quality and diverse education and training opportunities. The program also assists the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in preventing fraud, waste, and abuse in the administration of the GI Bill. Pictured here is the CSAAVE team. On December 22, 2010, President Barack Obama signed legislation establishing a process for ending the "don't ask, don't tell" (DADT) policy, thus allowing gay, lesbian, and bisexual people to serve openly in the U.S. Armed Forces. Implementation of the repeal was completed later, and DADT was no longer policy as of September 20, 2011. Since the repeal, LGBTQ+ servicemembers and veterans have served our nation with unwavering honor, courage, and pride.
Nearly 3,000 women veterans across all 58 California counties have spoken — and their voices highlight key themes and areas of opportunity. CalVet recently released findings from its 2025 Women Veterans Survey, one of the largest efforts of its kind in the state’s history. See the report at www.calvet.ca.gov/womenvets
