There's evidence that suggests workers who helped construct the massive pyramids in Egypt weren't just compensated with money, but also with large quantities of beer!
Archaeologists have found evidence of massive breweries near the pyramid sites, and even hieroglyphic writings that appear to depict workers receiving rations of beer. The theory is that beer, being a source of calories and hydration, was a valuable part of a worker's daily food intake.
