Mumbai's State Health Assurance Society (SHAS) is expanding the number of medical procedures covered under the universal healthcare scheme, MJPJAY, from 996 to 1,356 and empanelled hospitals from 1,000 to 1,900. The scheme has seen a 70% increase in surgeries performed in five years, from 6.03 lakh in 2019-20 to 10.25 lakh in 2023-24.
Since its inception, over 65 lakh surgeries have been carried out under MJPJAY, with the most demanded specialites being cancer treatment, cardiac procedures, cardiothoracic surgeries, kidney procedures, paediatrics, and polytrauma. To expand the scheme's reach, SHAS is scrutinizing nearly 1,600 applications for the additional 900 empanelment slots.
In Mumbai, 57 hospitals are part of the scheme, with over a dozen requesting empanellement. However, the city's five-star charitable hospitals have not shown any inclination to join. The government plans to engage a third-party agency to closely monitor service utilization, identify specialties experiencing higher demand, and detect misuse of the scheme by centers.
