6 TIPS FOR AN IMPACTFUL RETREAT

As the year draws to a close, you might want to take some time to retreat.

A retreat is a period of seclusion where you dedicate time to adequately meditate, study, pray, and fellowship with your Maker. An end-of-year retreat is particularly valuable for taking inventory of how your year went and seeking direction for the new one.

Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your retreat:

1) Fast Lightly
While the first month of the year (January) is often a fasting period for many churches, you can still incorporate fasting into your end-of-year retreat. However, we recommend fasting lightly. There are different types of fasts—choose one that suits you. The purpose of a light fast is to subdue the flesh so your spirit can be more active and receptive during the retreat.

2) Prayer
There are about 9-10 prayer watches in a day (e.g., 6 a.m., 9 a.m., 12 p.m., etc.). Observing these prayer watches during your retreat fosters deeper spiritual engagement, resulting in a more impactful experience.

3) Bible Study
Set a Bible reading plan for your retreat and commit to following it. You may choose to focus on a particular book of the Bible, a topic, or a Bible character to study during this period. As you study, you position yourself to hear from God more clearly—one of the primary purposes of a retreat.

4) Meditation
Meditation involves thinking deeply and pondering the scriptures you’ve read and studied. It is a vital tool for unlocking the spiritual realm, allowing you to commune with God and receive feedback more readily. Don’t just read the Bible; ensure you meditate on it intentionally.

5) Songs
Listening to spiritual songs and sounds can significantly enhance your retreat experience. Songs from minstrels such as Minister Theophilus Sunday, Pastor Lawrence Oyor, Ebuka Songs, Abbey Ojomu, and Emino Sound Priest (to name a few) can prepare your soul and uplift your spirit. 6) Movies
You might be surprised to see this on the list, but watching spiritual movies can uplift your spirit during a retreat. Movies from Christian drama ministries such as Mount Zion Movies, Fejos Baba, and KayBabs are great options. Additionally, watching documentaries about early church revivals, church fathers, and spiritual pathfinders can enrich your experience.
