Adivasi Lives Matter

For six days, the Sangtam Nagas of Nagaland come together to celebrate Mungmung, their most important festival, rooted in food production, blessings, prosperity and community.

From preparing food and sharing meat to worshipping the three hearthstones believed to represent Lijaba, cleaning village paths, visiting relatives and exchanging gifts, every day carries a special meaning.

When the six days come to an end, the restrictions are lifted, and the harvesting of new crops begins.

Mungmung is more than a harvest festival. It is a celebration of faith, food, community and continuity, keeping Sangtam traditions alive across generations.

गोम्हा पर्व एक पारंपरिक संथाल समुदाय का पर्व है, जिसे वर्षा ऋतु में मनाया जाता है। इस दिन, खेतों में काम करना अशुभ माना जाता है।

एक प्रचलित कथा है कि कई समय पहले, दो अनाथ बच्चे "कड़ो और कुयली" अपने मामा-मामी के यहाँ रहते थे। गोम्हा पर्व के दिन, जब घर में विविध पकवान बन रहे थे, तो बच्चों ने भी खाने की इच्छा जताई। मामी ने गुस्से में उन्हें खेत में काम करने के लिए भेज दिया। जब बच्चे वापस नहीं आए, मामा ने जानकारी ली और सुनकर चिंतित हो गए क्योंकि वह जानते थे कि आज के दिन खेत में काम करना अशुभ है।

खेत में पहुँचकर उन्होंने देखा कि बच्चों के शरीर का अधिकांश हिस्सा साँप की तरह बदल चुका था। बच्चों ने अपने मामा से कहा कि वे घर वापस नहीं जा सकते। उन्होंने अपने मामा से सिंदूर और सरसों के तेल की मांग की। मामा ने उनके सर पर सिंदूर और सरसों का लेप लगाया और उसके बाद वे दोनों बच्चे वहाँ से चले गए। उसी स्थान पर दो नदियाँ बहने लगीं, एक नदी का नाम कोडों और दूसरे का नाम कौयली रखा गया।

संथाल समुदाय गोम्हा पर्व के दिन खेत में काम नहीं करता क्योंकि इसे अशुभ माना जाता है। इस दिन वे गोँधा लेटो, गोँधा पत्तरा पीठा और हंडिया बनाते हैं। वर्षा ऋतु में गोँधा आसानी से मिलता है, इसलिए वे मांस की जगह गोँधा खाना पसंद करते हैं।

The festival holds a special place for children and their role within the family and community. On this day, children traditionally receive blessings from their fathers a beautiful expression of love, guidance and intergenerational connection.

Hünapungbi celebrates not just a tradition, but the bond between generations and the importance of passing values and culture to the next generation.
