The Lagos State Police Command has identified Inspector Osumah Frank as the officer seen in a viral video making political and ethnic remarks about Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi and the Igbo people.

In the video, Frank, who was wearing police uniform while travelling in a public vehicle, was heard saying that Obi could not become President because he is Igbo. He also made comments about Obi’s 2027 presidential ambition and suggested that the race should be between President Bola Tinubu and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

The inspector was also reported to have made other allegations and derogatory comments about Obi. These claims were made by the officer in the video and have not been established by the police.

Reacting to the video, the Lagos State Police Command said it had commenced appropriate disciplinary action against Frank in line with established regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Command stressed that the remarks were made in Frank’s personal capacity and did not represent the official position, views or disposition of the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force. Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, also reiterated that officers must maintain professionalism, civility, discipline and respect for members of the public.

Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has urged Nigerians, particularly young voters, to make informed choices in the 2027 general election, stressing that citizens must take responsibility for the candidates they elect.

Kukah made the call on Friday while speaking on the sidelines of the 70th anniversary celebration of Saint Finbarr’s College in Lagos. He encouraged voters to carefully examine the backgrounds, records and qualifications of candidates before deciding who to support.

The bishop urged Nigerians to make use of information available online to research politicians seeking their votes, rather than relying solely on political parties, campaign promises or other people’s opinions.

Kukah also said voters should not place the entire responsibility for credible elections on institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the government or security agencies. According to him, citizens also have a responsibility for the outcomes produced by their choices at the polls.

He therefore urged Nigerians to approach the 2027 election with greater awareness and responsibility, particularly as political parties and candidates intensify preparations for the polls.

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan has said adequate funding will be critical to providing the security and logistics needed for the successful conduct of the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan spoke on Wednesday in Owerri, Imo State, while delivering a goodwill message at the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers, which focused on developing a roadmap for effective election security management.

He said INEC’s responsibilities extend beyond conducting presidential and National Assembly elections to governorship and state assembly polls, voter registration and political party registration. He added that the commission also relies on security agencies for election and voter-registration operations, making adequate funding essential.

The INEC chairman stressed that sufficient resources are needed to deploy personnel and electoral materials across LGAs, wards and polling units. He also called for stronger coordination among INEC, the police and other security agencies through the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, while urging senior police officers to maintain professional neutrality and protect the integrity of the ballot.

Sanwo-Olu, UN Partners Seek Solutions to Lagos Flooding, Coastal Threats

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has held a high-level roundtable with the United Nations Global Compact Networks and regional partners from Africa and the Caribbean to develop solutions to climate threats facing Lagos.

The meeting focused on urgent measures to protect coastal communities and critical infrastructure from rising sea levels, coastal erosion and recurring flooding, while also exploring sustainable financing for climate-resilience projects.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos, as a low-lying coastal megacity, is already experiencing the effects of climate change through flooding and increasing pressure on roads, homes and businesses. He stressed that the scale of the challenge requires practical action rather than prolonged policy discussions.

The governor also called for stronger partnerships with the private sector and international development institutions, saying government funding alone is insufficient to finance the long-term infrastructure needed to protect Lagos from severe environmental threats.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has backed workers’ demands for a reduction in petrol price to ₦500 per litre and a minimum monthly salary of ₦500,000, as public servants seek relief from rising living costs.

The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (Trade Union Side) gave the Federal Government until September 30, 2026, to respond to the demands, which also include an immediate wage award and an upward review of salaries and allowances.

The workers said high petrol prices have increased transportation costs and contributed to rising prices of food and other essential goods. They also called for an immediate committee to begin negotiations on a new national minimum wage ahead of January 2027.

NLC Acting General Secretary Benson Upah described the demands for a wage award and lower petrol prices as legitimate and realistic, stressing the need for measures to ease the economic pressure on Nigerian workers.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has paraded its suspended Niger State Commandant, Commandant Suberu Aniviye and 23 other personnel over the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the Corps’ custody.

The development comes as the Corps intensifies its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths, with questions being raised over the treatment, supervision and accountability of personnel involved.

Addressing journalists at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Sauka, Abuja, the Corps’ National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commandant Babawale Afolabi, says 24 personnel are currently under investigation.

Afolabi says the Corps will leave no stone unturned in establishing what happened, stressing that any personnel found culpable will face internal disciplinary measures and the full weight of the law.

He adds that the investigation is part of the Corps’ commitment to transparency, protection of human rights and strict adherence to professional and ethical standards.
The NSCDC says the outcome of the investigation will determine further administrative and legal actions against any personnel found responsible.

BREAKING NEWS : Lagos APC tells candidates to suspend overseas travel until after 2027 election

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has directed all its candidates contesting the 2027 general elections not to travel outside Nigeria until after the elections.

The party’s state chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, issued the directive on Friday during the inauguration of the Tinubu-Hamzat campaign council at the party secretariat in Ikeja.

Ojelabi urged the candidates to cooperate with the campaign council and remain available for campaign activities across the state.

“No candidate is allowed to travel outside the country until after the general election,”
“Let our campaign be devoid of hatred, thuggery and violence.” he said

Ojelabi said the ruling party would adopt a decentralised grassroots strategy that would deploy APC leaders and other members to senatorial districts, LGAs, wards and polling units.

He said the responsibility placed on APC members required clear lines of command, reporting and accountability throughout the campaign.

According to him, the strategy would be guided by the principle that all politics is local.

“Our emphasis this time will be more on ‘operation man your polling booth’. We are aware we have a total of 13,565 polling booths,” he said.

“Our people need to get involved locally and mobilise to get voters to deliver.

“Our target is to get five million votes out of the projected seven million votes in Lagos state, and we will rely on coordinated grassroots mobilisation to achieve the objective.”
