Mr Neel Raithatha aka The Wax Whisperer

I'm Mr Neel Raithatha, a UK qualified Audiologist, HCPC Registered Hearing Aid Dispenser, and Cerumenologist (Ear Care Specialist). I am director of both The Hear Clinic (private Audiology practice) and Clearwax (National Ear Care Training Institute).

My specialist interests including advanced verification of hearing aid fittings and development of endoscopic ear care.

This channel was created to provide an insight into the 'world' of a modern day Audiologist/Cerumenlogist. Here I upload case studies of endoscopic ear wax removal procedures using the iCLEARscope video oto-endoscopy in the hope of promoting clinical excellence in the field.

Who you ‘SHOULD’ & ‘SHOULDN’T’ go for your #earwaxremoval!

Amazing news all! An unbelievable number of my professional colleagues have contacted me since the @bbcbreakfast & @bbcnews coverage yesterday, to advise that so many members of the public, prior to booking an #earwaxremoval appointment, have been questioning their credentials and professionals qualifications. Don’t worry, you are doing the right thing and they are happy for you to do so!

The industry’s ‘hidden’ hearing and #auralcare truth is now out in the public domain.

Also, be careful of people using certain camera devices. They make look like the #iCLEARscope®️ and #WAXscope®️ since they incorporate a smartphone device. However, one in particular has unanswered decontamination concerns whilst people are taught to hold the suction probe by the suction hose (and not suction probe handle itself) since they don’t have enough space to hold it properly. I have a video of one of their trainers teaching there delegates.

Imagine someone entering your ear with a stainless steel probe that they don’t have full control over! Frightening wouldn’t you say, especially when considering that your tympa membrane (medical name for eardrum) is approximately only 0.1mm in thickness.

Okay! So ‘hear’ we go!!!! My debut at NARRATING! ‪@neelreads‬

As I recently posted, I’ve received numerous requests to narrate books, poems etc. and upload online. Apparently, some people enjoy listening to my voice!

This is way out of my comfort zone and I am by no means a proficient reader, so please be kind. As some of you know, I had a stutter growing up and use to dread when I was asked to read out aloud during a classroom lesson.

However, life is all about conquering your fears and coming out of your comfort zone. I have therefore created this new YouTube channel for my own personal reasons as much as for own listening pleasures!

If you like please do subscribe!

I can’t guarantee how frequently I will upload but it’s also a nice little hobby for me, so hopefully it is something I can do on a regular basis.

***THE MORE I READ THE COMMUNITY #EARWAXREMOVAL PILOT REPORT, THE WORSE IT GETS!**

The pilot makes the following bold calm, and I quote:-

“From a patient safety perspective, there has been no evidence to suggest that patients are coming to harm from non-registered professional staff performing earwax removal during this pilot.”

Now this is not too hard to believe considering only 12% of patients completed the survey and 650 patients appear to be unaccounted for (if you are one of them please get in touch!).

However, I’ve found evidence from one of the 12% of patients who did complete the survey that they are indeed coming to harm from non-registered professional staff performing ear wax removal during the pilot!

See below excerpt from the report itself! 👇🏼

You can’t make this stuff up!

***SOME FACTS AND FIGURE FROM COMMUNITY EAR WAX REMOVAL SCHEME WHICH WAS DEEMED SUCCESSFUL THAT RAISES MAJOR CONCERNS***

In total, 4,328 patients in the scheme underwent #microsuction at a nearby participating pharmacy funded by the NHS. Treatment was provided by Pharmacists, Pharmacists Technicians and non-registered and non-clinical Pharmacist Assistants.

1,041 patients were either flagged as requiring a follow-up or had one despite it not being flagged.

Therefore, the follow-up rate in comparison to patients undergoing #microsuction is almost 1 in 4 (24%). Remember, patients were asked to use softening drops 10-14 days prior their appointment as well. The 18% quoted below also includes patients who just underwent an ear examination and a patient interview only.

Also, the follow-up rate is likely to be superficially low in the pilot since pharmacies were not remunerated for providing follow-ups. Instead some pharmacies were providing them at their own cost (kudos to you).

Therefore, how many patients were not offered a follow-up despite requiring one because pharmacies were not getting funding for it?

I am also desperate to know what happened to the 650 patients who did not have a follow up appointment despite being flagged as needing one. Surely they were not accidentally and incorrectly flagged as needing a follow-up one despite not needing one!? If so, it opens up another line of questioning about the validity of the pilot.

650 unaccounted patients flagged as requiring a follow-up but did not have one is deeply worrying.

Also, why were the pharmacies in the pilot left to “mark their own homework”? Surely a pilot of this nature would want to have some *quality assurance* in place to ensure non-registered and non-clinical Pharmacy Assistants were competently treating and managing their patients.

For UK viewers:-

If you had problems with your hearing and/or ear wax and you contacted your GP surgery, would you be happy to referred to a Pharmacy on the NHS and potentially be assessed, have your ears examined, ear wax removed and hearing checked by a non-registered and non-clinical ‘Pharmacy Assistant’?

Okay guys, kind of impromptu, but decided last minute to take some time to rest, enjoy and party in sunny Goa, Mumbai and Kerala in India!

I’ve not had anytime to pre-upload any videos, I’m afraid, so you will have to re-watch some older ones!

Upon my return I have SO MANY complex and interesting cases to upload, so will be worth the wait!

Take care!

***WOW! IS THIS HOW A PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP BODY LIKE BSHAA BEHAVES ESPECIALLY WHEN DEALING WITH A SERIOUS COMPLAINT?***

I called BSHAA this afternoon to receive an update on the complaint I lodged against their President on Wednesday 8th November 2023, following his now infamous post on a private Audiology Forum on Facebook that was attempting to publicly vilify me.

I was surprised to learn that BSHAA had already responded to others who had also sent in emails of complaint, including members of the public, but not given me the same courtesy.

I was greeted by a very pleasant lady who advised she would pass on my telephone number onto somebody who will call me back.

I have just received a phone call from a gentleman saying he is calling me back from BSHAA. Incredibly, when I asked who I was speaking to, they refused to give me their name! To say he was rude was an understatement!
I explained that I am not willing to speak to anybody unless I know who I am speaking to. They said if that's the case they would simply put the phone down. The phone went dead.

The unknown caller then called back. He said the line accidentally went dead. I once again kindly asked for his name so we could speak. He declined. I explained this is not how a professional body of any kind should behave and I am not prepared to have a conversation with someone not knowing who they are.

The conversation soon ended because he was not willing to provide his name. I have the entire phone call recorded in case BSHAA wish to deny this is how the conversation went. I can confirm the individual was fully aware that the call was recorded because it is stated in our pre-recorded introductory message.

I am utterly shocked that this is how BSHAA are dealing with what is a very serious complaint. It would appear based on this conversation that they are not going to discipline or remove the President from his post, and instead are going to close ranks and protect him.

WOW!
