"I was tipping the scale at about 300 pounds, and I felt great."

Octavia Spencer shared with Woman's World that her only warning signs of type 2 diabetes were being thirsty all the time and using the bathroom all the time. She assumed one explained the other, until a routine physical 20 years ago revealed elevated blood sugar.

I was honored to be included in this article to explain why that happens: when blood sugar runs high, your kidneys try to filter out the excess sugar, which increases urination and raises your risk of dehydration.

Two things worth doing after reading her story:

✅ Keep your yearly physical: "silent killer" means exactly what she said. Just because you feel fine doesn't mean things are happening in your body.

✅ If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, ask your doctor about the uACR: a simple urine test that checks how your kidneys are doing

Almost 10 years ago, I nearly died after giving birth to my daughter. I kept telling my nurse that something was wrong, and each time she reassured me that everything looked fine.

The truth was that I was bleeding internally, and if that had been my first delivery, I would not be here today.

I shared my story because what happened to me happens to Black women across our country every day. Being a doctor did not protect me, but being heard saved my life.

Thank you to @bonnie_fuller for helping me share my story with such care.
