Anyways, to address the one thing: yeah, I double-checked and it was 4 chunks, not 8. But either way, it turns out d3rlord3 lowered his render distance, not his simulation distance. The simulation distance is what actually influences which chunks load, meaning that the trap was actually more invalid than I previously mentioned in my post.
