A quick word from the WORD
I want to briefly share my thoughts on the sin of self righteousness among us Christians( refer to (Luke 18:9-, the parable of the tax collector and the Pharisee). We see that the sinner was justified and yet the prayer of Pharisee who fasted twice every week, paid his tithe, didn’t extort etc was rejected.
Our righteousness is not from works nor is it driven for the law ( set of rules) but by faith in Jesus Christ( romans 10:1-9, Philippians 3:7-9, romans 14 etc). The law in itself can not give us righteousness rather faith in Jesus Christ as it is written that Abraham believed and it was accounted to him as righteousness.
Self righteousness among many things is a root of many sins e.g despising others, comparing yourself with others, static( deprived growth), self centeredness and most importantly SPIRITUAL BLINDNESS( refer to Mathew 23). Many of us have fallen in this area.
Lastly, the Bible in Ephesians 1:6 says that by the glory and richness of his grace, he ACCEPTED us with his beloved. This means that Jesus didn’t give us conditions /rules for us to be accepted as his sons/ daughters rather it was because of his mercies and grace. So if anyone( sinner, male or female, religious or not, studied or not, poor or rich, finished read the whole bible or not, fasts or not, born in a Christian family or not etc) believes in their heart unto righteousness and confess with their mouth that Jesus died,rose again and is reigning in his glory, they will by all means be born again and accepted. So then the change comes after one has met Christ and not before( let us stop comparing ourself to others and despising others just because they don’t follow our set of rules.
Moreover the scriptures have made it very CLEAR that Whoever calls upon the name Jesus will not be put to shame ( remember the thief on the cross) and if a man be in Christ, he is a new creature!!! The Adamic nature dies when Jesus takes over our lives.
So, we who have been self righteous can no longer boost that we are better than others just because we do things that others don’t do rather as the apostle Paul says help in humility those who are on the opposition!
N.B: sometimes we as Christians can’t help but wonder....if the LAW in itself can’t give righteousness, why then did God give it in the first place?....well, I will have you know that the main purpose of the law is LOVE. As the apostle Paul says that the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, however we who are/ were self righteous have strayed and turned aside to idle talk, desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what we say nor the things which we affirm.( 1 Timothy 1:5-11).
