You know it’s been a hot summer when I don’t even have the energy to wet set my hair. 😂

This is my natural hair, lots and lots of curls, which you don’t see very often because apparently my commitment to a weekly wet set has one very firm boundary: heat.

At some point this summer I simply decided that if my hair wanted to do whatever it wanted, it was welcome to it. I was too hot to argue.

Which is rather fitting because tomorrow’s video is a little late-summer vlog about exactly that: how much I dislike being hot, why summer has never really been my season, and all the things I’m looking forward to when autumn finally arrives.

Basically, it’s a few days of me proving that I can enjoy summer, provided the temperature remains within my very specific terms and conditions.

My apartment tour was so well received, and quite a few of you wanted a closer look at some of the individual pieces. Picked these lovely wildflowers while on a walk with Mildred this morning. I think this is my favorite sort of flower arrangement: a little wild, a little wonky, but utterly charming.This evening I’m hosting my monthly Patreon virtual meetup, and we’ll be discussing Vintage Gardens and Green Spaces. Gardening, botanicals, old kitchen gardens, healing herbs… I could happily talk about this subject for hours. There’s something so satisfying about learning how people have connected with plants throughout history and thinking about how we can bring a little of that into our own lives today.Do you have a flower or plant that instantly reminds you of someone or somewhere?

One of my favorite things about collecting old books is that you never know what you'll find inside.

A few years ago I picked up this 90-year-old Home Economics textbook and stumbled across a chapter called "The Well-Dressed Girl." It includes guidance for young women like:

✨ "Are you a vision or a sight?"

✨ And a warning that dresses hanging unused in your closet "aren't paying their rent."

Some of it is wonderfully old-fashioned, some of it made me laugh out loud, and some of it... I have to admit... still makes a surprising amount of sense.

In tonight’s video, we'll be reading a bit of this chapter together to see which ideas deserve to stay in 1936... and which ones still have something to teach us today.

Off to Berlin. 🚆

I love traveling by train, watching towns pass by, reading a book, chatting, seeing different places I’ve not seen before… it all feels a little calmer. Sure we could have gotten there faster by plane, but I really enjoy this slower pace of travel. Not to mention it is quite a bit more economical.

The Art of Slow Travel is something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately, and it ended up becoming the topic of my latest YouTube video and the fifth video in my “Vintage Living in the Modern World” series. It goes live tonight at 6:00 PM CEST, and it’s all about how slowing down has completely changed the way I travel.

For now though, I’m just going to enjoy the ride.

We are heading to the Critical Role event on Monday, then we’ll be seeing The Cure in concert on Friday. With of course lots of great food, museums and seeing some friends in between. See you from Berlin. ❤️

Mildred loves her gel cooling mat! We are all surviving this heatwave. We have two AC units and all the curtains and blinds are drawn to keep the relentless sun out.

Baking fail! As part of my 50 new things in my 50s I tried to make bagels and utterly failed. Here in Vienna there just aren't any good bagels, so I wanted to try and see if I could make decent bagels at home. I bought bread flour, barley malt syrup and followed a New York Times recipe. I even kneaded it by hand for 20 minutes (I don't have a stand mixer and that's what the recipe called for).

It all seemed to go well, the dough came together really nicely, I shaped and then chilled them in the fridge for 24 hours. But as soon as they hit the boiling water they started to deflate and then kept deflating in the oven. They are chewy and have a good flavor, I'll give them that, but other than that they aren't great.

So if anyone has advice on what I might have done wrong, or if you have a tried and true bagel recipe for chewy New York style bagels, help a gal out.

Mildred and I have an important announcement: my YouTube break is officially over! 😊

First, thank you all for your patience, kindness, and encouragement while I took some time away. I was honestly overwhelmed by the thoughtful comments and support on my break announcement. It meant more than you know.

My new video premieres tonight at 6:00 PM CEST.

After taking a month away from YouTube, I found myself reflecting on quiet lives, slow living, creativity, turning 50, and whether a life that feels wonderful to live necessarily looks very interesting online.

It's a cozy, reflective vlog filled with homemade muffins, planting, cross stitch, Mildred, and a few thoughts I've been wrestling with lately.
