people will say and you’ve probably heard it too…
“there are still jobs out there”
and that’s true.
but what’s changed is how many people are going after the same roles now.
when things stall, even a little…
roles stay open longer
more people start applying
and everything starts to feel… crowded
so it’s not just about whether opportunities exist anymore.
it’s about how many people are going after the same roles at the same time.
and that’s why it can feel like you’re doing everything right… and still not getting anywhere.

A lot of people right now aren’t stuck because they’re not trying.
They’re stuck because the job search process itself has changed.
You can apply to more roles…
and barely hear back.
You can check all the boxes…
and still feel like it’s not landing the way it used to.
And after a while, that starts to wear on you.
Not because you’re doing anything wrong.
But because the job market just isn’t moving the same way anymore.
I’m curious…
which one feels closest right now?

Sometimes career changes aren’t about chasing something new…
They’re about finally admitting something isn’t working anymore.
Recently that was the shift for me.
And once you decide to ‘really’ bet on yourself…
What you look for starts to change.
So I’m curious…
what matters most to you right now?

If you’ve looked at job postings lately and felt like…
something is just… off.
Recently, I came across a role that looked good on paper, but the expectations didn’t quite line up.
It wasn’t just one thing.
It was a little bit of everything.
More ownership.
More flexibility.
More figuring things out as you go.
And the part that stood out most…
it wasn’t always clear what actually mattered.
Even the compensation didn’t fully match the stretch.
So I passed.
Because at a certain point, it’s not about
“can I do this?”
It’s about:
Does this make sense for the way I want to work?
Does this feel sustainable?
Does this actually align with what I’m building right now?
And I think that’s the part people don’t talk about enough.
Not every role that looks like an opportunity…
is one worth taking.

Lately, I’ve been noticing something…
roles aren’t really opening up the way they used to.
It’s not that opportunities are gone.
It’s more like…
everything is just moving slower.
Roles stay open longer.
Hiring takes longer.
And the whole process feels more drawn out than it used to.
I saw this come up recently while helping someone think through their next move…
and it shifted how we approached the search entirely.
Not “apply to more”
but:
Where is there actual movement?
Where are things still progressing?
What’s worth your time right now?
Because when things slow down like this…
it’s not just about what’s available.
It’s about how you move through it. Need a place to start moving, I’ve shared a path here → thepillarassistant.com/freeresources/

Here’s where it gets confusing…
Entry-level hiring has held up better than other roles…
But that doesn’t mean it’s growing.
Which do you think is actually true about entry-level jobs right now?

A lot of us were taught that bigger companies mean more opportunity.
More roles, more structure, more stability.
But that’s not always how it plays out.
Smaller companies tend to have a higher share of entry-level roles…
While larger companies are often more top-heavy.
Which means fewer entry-level roles than you might expect for how big they are.
So if you’ve been focusing mostly on big-name companies…
And not getting much traction.
It might not be your resume.
It might be where you’re looking.
This is exactly why I started looking at companies differently…
I put a few of them here → thepillarassistant.com/the-pillar-list/

In case you’re wondering…
Bigger companies don’t always mean more opportunity.
A lot of people assume large companies hire more entry-level talent.
But that’s not quite how it works.
Which companies tend to have more entry-level workers compared to senior roles?

Most people assume more experience = more stability.
That once you reach a certain level, things get easier.
But that’s not always how this market is working right now.
I saw this firsthand recently… someone I worked with for years was let go after decades with their company.
It was a quiet reminder that experience doesn’t always protect you the way we expect it to.
In some cases, entry-level roles have actually held up better than mid-level and senior roles.
Not because they’re better —
but because they’re lower risk for companies.
So if your job search feels slower than expected…
or things just aren’t lining up the way they used to…
…it might not be your experience.
It might be how hiring is shifting.
