We share with profound sorrow the passing of World War II veteran Stan Nelson of Anoka, Minnesota, who left us on November 20, 2025, at the age of 105. A hero in every sense, his courage was forged on the violent waters of the English Channel.

As a Lieutenant (j.g.) and Communications Officer aboard LCI-492, Stan rode in the first wave on D-Day, steering his landing craft again and again into the inferno of Omaha Beach. With every run, he carried soldiers toward history—drawing enemy fire away from them, risking his own life so others might reach the shore.

He did not just witness history.
He helped shape it.

Rest in peace, Stan Nelson. Your courage endures. 🕊️🇺🇸

At the end of the 1800s and the beginning of the 1900s, over 20 million immigrants arrived in the United States.
For many, America was seen as the promised land — a place of opportunity, work, and hope for a better future. They crossed the ocean with little more than courage, dreams, and the belief that life could be different on the other side.

Among those millions were about 4 million Italians.
Men and women who left behind poverty, hardship, and uncertainty, carrying with them their language, traditions, and strong sense of family.

And within that Italian migration, around 1 million were Sicilians.
They left the island in search of dignity and opportunity, helping to build communities, neighborhoods, and generations that would shape American society forever.

What began as a journey filled with sacrifice became the foundation of a future that still lives on today.
