BELLEVILLE NJ: DAILY NEWS 1992

Robert (Cabert) Bisaccia was considered a potential replacement for John Gotti after Gotti was convicted.

Having lost their quarterback, the Gambinos could be following the Giants and Jets across the Hudson River to find their future.

In the wake of John Gotti’s murder and racketeering conviction, the headquarters of the Gambino family may move from the streets of Little Italy to the middle-class Newark suburb of Belleville, N.J.

That’s where Robert (Cabert) Bisaccia, a 53-year-old reputed capo viewed by law enforcement officials as a leading contender to replace Gotti as boss of the Gambino crime family, has his base of operations – at 90 Franklin Ave., in the community’s heavily Italian southwest section.
‘There’s not one really strong guy who’s heads and shoulders above the rest, but Cabert’s got the firepower,” said one source.

“If John has a say, Bisaccia could get control, said another source who cautioned that Bisaccia will need to beat back pening state racketeering charge to have a “realistic” chance to take control of the crime family.

Bisaccia, of Nutley, is on trial in Newark with six associates on racketeering charges that include kidnapping, armed robbery, bribery and tax violations.
Gotti respected Bisaccia’s ability with a gun, especially when several members of a family crew were having difficulty killing a Queens man suspected of slaying a Gambino soldier, Salvatore (Sammy Bull) Gravano testified at Gotti’s trial.
Gotti said Bisaccia was “a nervy guy,” Gravano testified, adding, “John told me to get this guy, Bobby Cabert, who was with us, and myself, go out and help him kill this guy.”

In separate cars, Bisaccia and Gravano, each accompanied by a backup, drove to the hit. When Gravano saw the target, “I notified them on the walkie-talkie. Bobby Cabert got out of the car, shot him in the head,” said Gravano.
In the bugged apartment above Little Italy’s Ravenite Social Club, Gotti remarked he would act in a “Cosa Nostra way” and step down as boss if convicted and sent off to jail. “If I get 50 years, I know what I gotta do,” said Gotti.

If he meant what he said, and Bisaccia is convicted in the current case against him, here are seven other capos considered to be possible contenders. Each, however, has a drawback.
– Joseph (Joe Butch) Corrao. Not in great health; awaiting trial on racketeering and bribery charges.

– James (Jimmy Brown) Failla. Aging (74), ailing and said to be uninterested.

– Frank (Frankie Dap) Dapolito. “Wants no part of it,” said one insider.

– John (Handsome Jack) Giordano. Would be a very strong candidate if he weren’t sentenced to four years in one case and awaiting trial on state racketeering charges in another.

– Thomas Gambino. Son of Carlo, patriarch of the family, who recently plea-bargained his way out of jail on state racketeering charges, is said to be unintereste.

– Daniel Marino. A big money-earner who supervises the protection, loansharking and labor racketeering schemes of the Westies. Not viewed as tough enough
– Nicholas Corrozzo. A recently promoted Brooklyn capo with a tough crew acquitted of racketeering with Gotti in 1987; younger brother Joseph a regular at Gotti trial. Doubts about his managerial abilities.
