🍁🍂Thanksgiving: Why celebrate a document that didn’t grant us any rights/privileges? During slavery, Africans took time to b thankful for what they had, which of course wasn't much. 1777, the Continental Congress delivered a decree for the 13 colonies to give thanks for reaching a victory over the British at Saratoga, the Africans also took part n the celebration. Slaves who worked n the fields would go out & catch wild game for their fam & close slave friends. The women would prepare cornmeal/pone cakes to go along with the game. Lincoln signed the proclamation of a national Thanksgiving Day, unifying the various regional practices that had already been taking place throughout the nation (1863). Enslaved blacks saw the holidays as an opportunity to escape. They plotted before the holiday, took full advantage of the relaxed work schedules & the travels of slaveholders, who were too far away to stop them. Over time, Blacks & America view Thanksgiving as a time to gather with family, watch football, & enjoy delicious food. What's missing though, is the focus on liberation. Although we're physically not n chains, we're still oppressed in all areas of life. Now I'm not trying to tell u how/what not to celebrate, but ask urself what r u really celebrating. The genocide of Native Americans, the yrs of oppression & terrorism we endured n Amerikkka. Instead of telling the real story of Thanksgiving, American history is kept covered for us to believe the Pilgrims got along with Indians living n perfect harmony. Actually, 1637, (MA) Governor, John Winthorp, declared “Thanksgiving” to celebrate the safe return of the colonist volunteers that left for war against the Indians. War resulted n the massacre of 700 Pequot Indians. Have productive conversations at the tables & strategize about tackling issues we face n society. B thankful for our freedom, but remember the fight for liberation isn't over. It's important to not only know the true history of holidays, but also personal research to find real facts on American history. Thanksgiving isn't recognized for the same reasons as it was yrs ago. Rather it's a day spent with love ones thankful for 1's many blessings. 🍁🍂
