Pavneet Singh - UPSC

If you are preparing for UPSC 2027 and have not yet confidently finalised your optional, what is the biggest reason?

After voting, mention the optional(s) you are currently considering in the comments and one reason why.

I am asking because over the next 16 weeks, the PSIR Decision Project is going to approach optional selection differently. I don't want to tell you that PSIR is the right optional. I want to help you discover whether it is right for you.

Over the last ten days, we've spoken about memory, judgement, familiarity, assumptions and confidence.

Now answer this honestly.

After reading these posts, what do you think is the **single biggest reason** students fail the Preliminary examination?

🟒 Lack of knowledge.

🟑 Incomplete syllabus.

πŸ”΅ Poor thinking while solving questions.

πŸ”΄ Not enough mock tests.

There are no marks for reading the maximum number of books.

There are marks only for making the maximum number of correct decisions during those two hours.

πŸ’¬ Vote first. Then tell me in one sentence: **What has been your biggest learning from this 10-day series?**

Imagine you're solving a Prelims question.

Within the first five seconds, you feel absolutely certain that you know the correct answer.

What do you usually do next?

🟒 Mark the answer immediately.

🟑 Read all the statements once again before deciding.

πŸ”΅ Read all four options carefully and then decide.

πŸ”΄ Deliberately look for a reason why my first answer might be wrong.

The biggest mistakes in Prelims are rarely made because students know too little.

They are often made because confidence arrives before careful thinking.

πŸ’¬ Vote honestly. Do you trust your first instinct, or do you consciously verify it before marking the answer?

While solving a Prelims question, what do you trust the most?

🟒 My memory.

🟑 The exact words written in the question.

πŸ”΅ My intuition.

πŸ”΄ My elimination process.

Most wrong answers don't happen because students lack information.

They happen because the mind quietly adds information that the examiner never wrote.

That's where assumptions begin.

πŸ’¬ Vote honestly. Which one do you naturally rely on the most while solving questions?

Which type of UPSC question gives you the highest confidence?

🟒 A topic I've studied many times.

🟑 A topic I revised recently.

πŸ”΅ A topic I know only partially.

πŸ”΄ None. Every question makes me equally careful.

Now here's something to think about.

What if the questions you feel **most confident about** are also the ones where you're most likely to make avoidable mistakes?

Sounds strange?

πŸ’¬ Vote first. Then tell meβ€”have you ever been completely confident about an answer and later discovered that it was wrong?

Have you ever checked the answer key after the exam and said,

"I knew this topic... but I still marked the wrong answer."

Be honest.

What do you think usually causes that mistake?

🟒 I don't know enough facts.

🟑 I read the question too quickly.

πŸ”΅ I assume things that the question never actually says.

πŸ”΄ It depends on the question.

Most students blame their knowledge.

Very few examine the way they read.

πŸ’¬ Vote first. Then tell meβ€”what is the biggest reason *you* mark questions incorrectly?
