🧸 Get Ready for the Teddy Bear Sew-Along! 🪡

Our Teddy Bear Sew-Along is starting soon — and now is the perfect time to get ready! 💛
Many of you will be sewing a traditional jointed teddy for the very first time, so I’d love to make the preparation easier for you. One of the most challenging parts — especially for beginners — is gathering all the right materials and tools. Since delivery can take a bit of time, let’s start early. ✂️
Here’s what you’ll need for our bear (about 6 inches tall):
1️⃣ Mohair – 20 x 40 cm (12 mm pile, sparse, straight structure)
or Viscose – 20 x 40 cm (6 mm pile, medium dense, straight structure).
In the US, fabric is sold by the yard; in Europe, by the metre. One bear requires about 1/16 yard or 1/16 metre.
I usually sew with Helmbold, but fabrics from other manufacturers for the Teddy technique also work beautifully.
2️⃣ 5 T-shaped cotter pins (20 mm) and 10 plywood or cardboard discs with washers (20 mm)
These can often be found as ready-made joint sets.
3️⃣ Black glass eyes – 1 pair (3 mm)
4️⃣ Filling: poly fiber or wood wool
5️⃣ Mineral, glass, or steel pellets – 50 g (for a compact, heavier feel)
6️⃣ Threads: strong sewing thread (for setting eyes) and Perlé or DMC floss (for the nose)
7️⃣ Tinting paints for gentle shading
Tools you’ll need:
✂️ Sharp craft scissors
🪡 Regular and long doll needles (min. 10 cm)
🔩 Pliers, awl, tweezers, brushes, and a stuffing stick or chopstick
In Europe, I order my materials from Probear.com.
In the US, you can find supplies at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, or Amazon — search for German mohair, viscose teddy fabric, cotter pin joints, and glass eyes.
💡 But don’t worry — you can use any fabric you already have: plush, cotton, or even upcycled clothes. Every teddy will have its own charm and personality!
