I haven’t posted anything in literally a month.
I decided to take a social media break because over the past few months, my channel has felt more of a burden than anything else.
When I first started my channel, I was creating art for me-things I wanted to do that I wanted to share with the world. There was no pressure, and I didn’t feel like I had to live up to anyone’s expectations.
But when my channel started to do really well last may, some things changed. I went from just creating what I wanted, to expecting every video I made to go viral, and to keep gaining thousands of subscribers like I did during that time. I put so much pressure on myself, and when things didn’t do as well as I’d hoped, I got frustrated and discouraged. I started doing art that I thought YouTube would like, instead of art I was passionate about.
After that, even though I was still actively posting, my channel plateaued. I have literally been at around 7k subs since June- and not only that, but losing subscribers. For every video I’ve posted, I’ve gained a few subscribers, and lost a whole lot more. I don’t know why this is happening- I didn’t change my content style or my art. Videos I thought would do incredible did miserable- and that was really hard for me to be ok with. I spent hours editing, trying to create what I thought would do well, only to feel worse afterwards.
So I took a much needed break. I let the subscribers fall, I stopped putting pressure on myself- I decided to create for myself again. And if my videos don’t do well, that’s ok. I may never be a content creator, but that fact doesn’t determine my self worth or my art. But I’ll still keep posting, and I’ll still keep doing what I love, no matter the analytics.
