The San Francisco Peace Treaty clearly states that Japan renounced Taiwan but did not transfer it to China or any other country. Taiwan’s legal status was intentionally left undetermined. Moreover, neither the People's Republic of China (PRC, mainland China) nor the Republic of China (ROC, current government of Taiwan) signed the treaty, neither government was assigned ownership of Taiwan.
China has declared the treaty as "illegal and invalid," claiming it was a US-made document used to divide countries after World War II. So under China's logic, the pre-1951 status of Taiwan would legally be a colony of Japan.
Now everyone, let's join Japanese social media in laughing at China having accidentally argued for Taiwan to be "returned" to Japan.
