📌 From one aspirant...

I have been receiving many messages asking how I cleared IBPS PO in my first attempt, without coaching, while working full-time. So I thought of sharing my journey and the strategy I followed.

First of all, sorry for spamming this group. This message is not a promotion of any teacher, especially Abith sir. It is purely a gratitude post.

I am Naveen, from Kanyakumari. I completed my engineering in 2023 and got placed in an MNC in Coimbatore. My parents always wanted me to get a government job, but honestly, I never had any plan or idea to enter the government sector.

After working for about a year, I realised that job security is more important than salary. My company has been established for nearly 100 years and had never faced recession or job cuts. Ironically, after I joined, recession and layoffs started happening. That phase made me realise the real value and stability of a government job.

At that point, I decided that I needed a government job and chose to focus only on bank exams, rejecting all other exams. Since I was already earning more than a clerk’s salary, I decided to aim directly for PO.

I wanted to surprise my parents with the appointment letter, so I did not inform them about my preparation. I started preparing in December 2024.

My routine:
5:00 AM – Wake up
6:00 AM to 8:00 AM – Preparation
9:00 AM to 6:00 PM – Job
6:30 PM to 11:00 PM – Preparation

Based on others’ strategies, I thought that reasoning was comparatively easier.
So initially:
Morning – Quants
Evening – English

With only miscellaneous practice in reasoning, I cleared SBI Clerk Prelims (Jan 2025) within two months of preparation, but I failed in mains.

Gradually, my English marks improved, so I replaced English preparation with Reasoning and started preparing directly for PO Mains.

One month before SBI & IBPS PO Prelims, my job pressure increased drastically, and my work hours became 9 AM to 9 PM. I got mentally exhausted, gave up on the PO dream for a while, and shifted my focus to Clerk Mains.

I missed SBI PO Prelims by 1 mark and cleared IBPS PO Prelims by 1 mark.

For IBPS PO Mains, I went without specific preparation:
No descriptive preparation
Current affairs prepared only for clerk mains

In both these sections, I scored only single-digit marks, yet I cleared the mains with more than 15 marks above the cutoff. I strongly believe this happened because I had been preparing for mains consistently for nearly 6 months.

This Diwali, I finally told my parents that I was preparing for bank exams and that I might leave my job after clerk mains. They were happy that I chose banking, but also worried about whether I would succeed. I understand how difficult it is to prepare without a job. Though I was employed, the pressure I faced felt similar.

This journey was not easy. In the past year:
1.I visited my parents only 6 times
2.No movies, trips, or outings
3.Lost touch with many friends
4.Gained nearly 15 kgs
5.Vitamin D deficiency

Practice from Hindi YouTube channels
(I don’t know Hindi, but the quality of questions was excellent)
Practised each topic at least twice a week
One sectional test per week

I may not be experienced enough to give advice, but since many people asked, I would like to share a few points/ suggestions that worked for me:

1.If you are attending coaching, don’t restrict yourself only to the coaching material. Many educators teach advanced methods—explore them.

2.Practise each topic a minimum of two times a week.
If you are good at something, practise more to maintain it as your strength.
If you are weak at something, practise more to turn it into your strength.
Practice is key.

3.Regularly revisit and modify your strategy based on your progress.

4.Aim high.

5.There will be ups and downs in this journey. Try to maintain a strong mindset.
