🏴Glasgow, I’ll be bringing my 3D/AV live show to @SWG3 on Fri 30 January - I hope you can join me. The snippet is On Being with every frame hand drawn by the great Masanobu Hiraoka, with viola by Felix Gerbelot.
There are a handful of beautiful multi-coloured splatter vinyl available for my latest collaborative EP with legend Rob Clouth, entitled ‘8 Billion Realities’.
A huge thank you to Daniel Martin Diaz for the intricate hand-drawn artwork and to Jack Dominy for providing graphic design to fuse the whole package into a beautiful form🩵
8 Billion Realities - The forthcoming EP by Rob Clouth and myself out this Friday.
We have a first preview for you today ahead of the release, for my favourite track from the record, titled ‘A moment set aside’. Pre-save the release for a first listen: maxcooper.os.fan/pre-save-8-billion-realities
We were struggling a bit at the time stuck on trying to realise ideas and we decided to take a moment away from the discussions and planning and just try to have some fun with an improvised musical conversation - the track is a snippet of that conversation pretty much as it came at the time.
For the video project by @dith_idsgn, we chatted about forests as a visual counterpart for taking a moment out to be immersed in rich form - more on that later this week. 🌳
Some Mesh artist appreciation… we've had some really great releases recently from the likes of Aleph, Jinjé and Throwing Snow. Please take a listen if you get the chance - I hope there is something for you within one of these releases.
My English Teacher remix is available in Dolby Atmos spatial audio format courtesy of Richard Burki at Futurephonic studios. We had some fun with the drum panning and wrapping you in walls of sound for the noise sections. Really nice to work with acoustic elements like this for a change, maybe I should do some more.
Peace exists here. Some audio visual escapism with real light and form, no CGI/AI, by the great Xavier Chassaing.
The project started with a little island of peace inside an anonymous quote that resonated with me. I tried to make my own island of peace musically, turning to the familiarity of my favourite synth for safety and building from there with the quote in mind. Xavier took the same approach with natural form as our place of peace in amongst the chaos.
The full quote the project is based on was submitted as part of On Being album project, and reads “Life is meaning less. Nothing matters. Peace exists here. And yet the world is never ending. I cannot catch my breathe. Stress comes from the deadlines that we place on ourselves.”
You can find the whole collection of quotes from the project here: onbeing.maxcooper.net/
I love the feeling of being lost inside a piece of music, and the possibilities for story telling with space as a composition tool, so I've worked on a lot of spatial audio projects over the years.
Going back to my first Dolby Atmos album amongst the first released, through to the most recent, a collection of spatial audio-visual projects are on display in Amsterdam this week as part of ADE at Dolby Atmos House, TOBACCO Theater if you'd like to stop by for a listen. I unfortunately won’t be there this year, but I hope you enjoy the small exhibit we’ve put on.
I’m happy to share that “On Being” has been submitted for consideration at the 2025 Grammy Awards for ‘Best Immersive Audio Album’. Richard Burki did an amazing job on the Spatial Audio mix and we put a lot of thought and work into connecting the spatial structures of the pieces of music to the quotes that seeded the whole album.
It started with a question “What would you like to express which you cannot in everyday life?”. Your responses to that became the pieces of music, visual stories and the 3D structures we explored via Dolby Atmos. For example, when I found the quote “My mind is slipping”, I made notes of the chords slowly slip relative to one another to give emergent rhythms, but with the spatial mix where we could also place those slipping notes in different positions we also got emergent paths through the room around you - the spatial mix was able to increase the fidelity of the storytelling, which was always the aim - it’s easy to make stuff fly around for the sake of it, but the challenge is how the use of space can communicate something human.
We also pushed quite far away from the regular front focused Atmos format that’s common amongst music albums emulating the gig type experience with a front stage where most of the speakers and musicians are located. I love making full use of the fact we don’t have those limitations with an Atmos mix, the whole room can move or implode to a point, or whatever we can imagine.
The 7.1.4 individual audio channel renders of the Dolby Atmos mixes for On Being are now also available via maxcooper.net/ for those of you that prefer the raw audio per speaker rather than Atmos streaming options.
