We purchased this 1914 Indiana school back in August of ’21 and we’ve been working to bring her back to life! My husband and I are two Indiana kids who’ve spent the last 10 years living in NYC. We always planned on moving back to the Midwest but after our son was born in the spring of 2021, our Midwest plan narrowed to our hometown where both of our parents still live.
The school was active between 1914 and 1934, and then from 1934 to ~1956 it was a barn that housed cattle, pigs, chickens, sheep, and turkeys. From 1956-2021, another family called our school home.
Since we bought this old school, we’ve put in a new roof, waterproofed the foundation, fixed MANY floor joists… And have gone through many dumpsters to clean out 50+ years of stuff that was left inside and outside the school.
We want to preserve and restore as much as possible and we'll continue sharing this school's story as we go!

Some big updates in the classroom that is now our bedroom! Have been working on this for a while and finally started to actually look like there is progress. Also-- the schoolhouse currently has been converted into a monster. 👻🦇💀

Been a bit quiet around here as I’ve been working on a monster of a video that I just posted to celebrate the 4-year anniversary of starting on the schoolhouse! I’ve shared more of the story, the why behind our choices, and plenty of unseen moments. Whether you’ve been here since the start or just found us, this is the full ride. From leaky windows and roof decks to salvaged beams, antique doors, and a yard full of trees—it’s been quite the adventure.
And we’ve also been working on some projects that are on a bit longer of a timeline- like building built-in shelves for the kitchen out of salvaged chalkboards and the extra original schoolhouse stair treads that were too beat up to use as stair treads but perfect for other projects…. And making LOTS of lamps! :)

Working on a video about building a little book nook in a corner of the schoolhouse... but got distracted this weekend after finding this little school bus stop sign in an antique shop! Just turned it into a night light for my son... + a few other pics from the schoolhouse lately. :)

New video up today! While it's a lot about the little custom floor tiles I made for the schoolhouse entrances... there's also some really big updates in the cocktail cellar... aka the Engine Room! It was probably not the most important room to work on, it has been really fun and satisfying. 😅
Would love to know what you all want to see more of! Next up I have planned to share some of the yard plans... but also can shift around! :) https://youtu.be/A1bQgGTO9oE?si=-XyO8...

The biggest thank you to @CNBCMakeIt for sharing the schoolhouse’s story and for taking the time to walk through this old building we’ve poured so much of ourselves into. This journey has been overwhelming in every way—challenging, chaotic, stressful, and deeply rewarding. Seeing it shared like this is SO surreal, and it makes me pause to appreciate all the unexpected, little things that led us back to the best small town in the Midwest… and all the big, not-so-random things, like an army of family and the joy of watching a little cousin gang grow. 🙂

I've been hoarding a some gems that we've found to decorate the schoolhouse and make it feel more like home... including one thing that was original to *OUR* school! Really excited to share this one. ❤️
