All Souls’ Day

We have duties in justice and charity towards the souls in purgatory.

In justice, we have a duty to pray for the departed who were near to us or from whom we received some good in life, such as our superiors, or priests, etc. We have a duty in charity to all souls, for these souls are greatly loved by God, secondly because they are also suffering members of the Mystical Body of Christ, of which we form a part.

The souls in purgatory, not able to do anything for themselves, their pains and sufferings can only be shortened and eased through our prayers, suffrages, the indulgences we can gain for them, as well as the good works we do and present to God in their name.

It is good to have Holy Masses offered up for the souls in purgatory, to go to Holy Communion for them, and to do the Stations of the Cross for their relief. Almsgiving and mortification are also among the main ways of comforting and relieving the souls in purgatory.

It is only by praying and having people pray for the deceased that we can help these poor souls. How many Christians, so concerned in this life in avoiding as much suffering as possible for their parents and loved ones, will one day learn with dread that they could have delivered those very souls from purgatory, and through negligence or lack of faith did not worry nor trouble themselves on their account!

The Feast of All Saints

The number of the Saints is very great, but most of them are unknown to us. We know the names of the holy Apostles, of many apostolic men, many founders of religious orders, many popes, bishops, religious, hermits, virgins, widows, married people, nobles, princes, kings and emperors; but there is a number far exceeding these, whose very names are unknown to us. And we who are in the Church Militant and are united by the bond of charity with the Saints, should honour them duly, as they are honoured as true servants and friends by the Almighty Himself, the holy Church has appointed this day for honouring them all together.

The Saints are in glory, and for evermore. They are filled with joys for all eternity. But how have the Saints attained it? By the use of those means which God has left in His Church, by true faith; by holy baptism; by observing the Commandments, by avoiding sin, by practicing good works, by patience in crosses and sufferings.

They walked in the path which Christ shows us in His holy Gospel, the path of innocence, or the path of penance. They served God faithfully and constantly while they were on earth; they earnestly worked for the salvation of their souls; they either committed no sin, or did true penance. When God sent them poverty, sickness, or other adversity, they bore it with Christian patience.

Learn that we can gain Heaven in any station of life; for in any station, we can make use of those means which God has given us to work out our salvation. In Heaven there are Saints of all ranks and conditions. Many Saints lived in the same station in which you live; from it, they went to heaven; and so may you.

Live as the Saints lived, and you will go to heaven as they did. Walk in their footsteps. No one ever obtained life everlasting without the true faith. No one was saved by faith alone. The Saints laboured and suffered for heaven. You too must labour and suffer; heaven is worth it.

November is the month dedicated to the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

These souls are the faithful departed who have died in a state of grace but still require purification in Purgatory before entering Heaven. They cannot pray for themselves, but the prayers, sacrifices, and Masses offered by the faithful on earth can help ease their suffering and hasten their journey toward eternal rest.

Remembering the Holy Souls, especially during this month, is seen as an act of mercy and a spiritual work of charity, honoring the Communion of Saints, which unites the faithful on earth, the souls in Purgatory, and the saints in Heaven.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

The Kingship of Our Lord Jesus Christ

The royalty of Christ rests upon a twofold basis. He is our King by right of birth and by right of conquest.

The first refers us to the personality of the Son of God, whereby, in His divine nature as God and by virtue of the hypostatic union, He is the sovereign Lord and Master.

The second places before us the God-Man coming down on earth to rescue fallen man from the slavery of Satan, and by the labours and sufferings of His life, and passion, and death, to win a glorious victory for us over sin and hell.

It can be as simple as a string of beads on a cord, or as elaborate as the finest piece of jewellery. The instrument is but a means to keeping track of the prayers, not as if we were somehow tabulating a score, but to keep our minds focused on our meditations and our interactions with God, the Creator of the Universe, and with His most excellent creation, our Blessed Mother. It is the Rosary, a prayer often ridiculed in our age but only by those who misunderstand it or who do not believe.

On one level, the prayers of the Rosary are indeed simple—they are easily memorised, even by children, and once we have done so, it is almost impossible to ever forget them. This is actually one of the marvels of the Rosary, because it is so accessible to even the humblest believer. I can pray these prayers without a doctorate in theology or an intense reading of papal encyclicals, and my offering to God, through His Holy Mother, is every bit as acceptable as the most erudite prayer that could be composed. At the same time, these prayers contain a hidden complexity upon which the greatest of saints could spend their entire lives in meditation.

For those who have never prayed the Rosary, or who, even perhaps, have been seduced by those, even within the Church, who claim that this prayer is no longer suited for Catholics of the twenty-first century, I urge you to open your own hearts to our Lord’s Blessed Mother, who, like all good mothers, longs to hear from her children.

October is the month of the Holy Rosary.

This devotion was given by Our Lady to St Dominic and is entrusted to the Church as a weapon for the salvation of souls and for the defence of the Faith. From Pope Pius V, who called Christendom to pray the Rosary at Lepanto, to Pope Leo XIII, who repeatedly praised it as a most powerful weapon of the Faith, the Rosary has been recognised as a source of grace, strength and triumph for the faithful.

The Rosary is not simply the repetition of prayers; it is a living meditation on the mysteries of Christ’s Incarnation, Passion and Resurrection through the eyes of His Mother. Each Hail Mary is a step into these events, a blow against sin, and a chance to unite our hearts with the Heart of Mary, who guides us ever closer to her Son.

Our Lady promises abundant blessings to those who faithfully pray the Rosary: deliverance from sin, aid in life’s trials, growth in virtue, and the sure hope of eternal salvation. To the devout, she grants her special protection, strengthens them against misfortune, and obtains from God the light of His grace in life and at the hour of death. She intercedes for the conversion of sinners, the perseverance of the just, and the souls in purgatory, leading all who love her Rosary closer to Christ and the treasures of heaven.

In these times of spiritual confusion and attack, the Rosary remains a call to courage and fidelity. Let us take up our beads, storm heaven with prayer, and entrust ourselves to Mary, that her Immaculate Heart may triumph, and that we may persevere as soldiers of Christ.

You should be aware that the word 'angel' denotes a function rather than a nature. Those holy spirits of heaven have indeed always been spirits. They can only be called angels when they deliver some message. Moreover, those who deliver messages of lesser importance are called angels; and those who proclaim messages of supreme importance are called archangels. And so it was that not merely an angel but the archangel Gabriel was sent to the Virgin Mary. It was only fitting that the highest angel should come to announce the greatest of all messages.

Some angels are given proper names to denote the service they are empowered to perform. In that holy city, where perfect knowledge flows from the vision of almighty God, those who have no names may easily be known. But personal names are assigned to some, not because they could not be known without them, but rather to denote their ministry when they came among us. Thus, Michael means 'Who is like God'; Gabriel is 'The Strength of God'; and Raphael is 'God’s Remedy.'

Whenever some act of wondrous power must be performed, Michael is sent, so that his action and his name may make it clear that no one can do what God does by his superior power. So also our ancient foe desired in his pride to be like God, saying: I will ascend into heaven; I will exalt my throne above the stars of heaven; I will be like the Most High. He will be allowed to remain in power until the end of the world when he will be destroyed in the final punishment. Then, he will fight with the archangel Michael, as we are told by John: A battle was fought with Michael the archangel.

So too Gabriel, who is called God’s strength, was sent to Mary. He came to announce the One who appeared as a humble man to quell the cosmic powers. Thus God’s strength announced the coming of the Lord of the heavenly powers, mighty in battle. Raphael means, as I have said, God’s remedy, for when he touched Tobit’s eyes in order to cure him, he banished the darkness of his blindness. Thus, since he is to heal, he is rightly called God’s remedy.

The Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Holy Church recalls to our mind only seven of Our Lady’s sorrows, but who could form an estimate of their real number! The sufferings of the Mother of God cannot be comprehended; they are inconceivable.

But although her whole life was, like that of her Divine Son, a continuous series of sufferings and tribulations, the greatest woes and trials came to her during the week of the bitter Passion and Death of Jesus, when the storm of hatred and fury burst forth with all violence against Him.

During Our Saviour’s Passion, every glance at her suffering Son forced the sword deeper into Mary’s soul. Every sound of His voice brought special bitterness to her heart. Every increase of her love for Him—and it increased with every moment of His Passion—augmented her sorrows. The dearer and more precious Our Lord became to her, the more keenly she felt the heart-rending woe of His cruel and ignominious Passion! In her spirit as well as her senses, she felt every blow that was inflicted upon her Divine Son, every insult that was offered to His sacred Person. Yet no complaint or cry escaped her blanched lips. With heroic fortitude she suppressed her violent grief and, wholly conformed to the Divine Will, generously offered the sacrifice of her Son for the sins of the world.
