Fun Swedish

If you have been living in Sweden a while 🇸🇪, you probably know what “godis” means.

Godis 🍬🍫 = Candy / Sweets.

Swedes love godis, so it is a hard one to miss 😁. Things like lördagsgodis, a Saturday candy binge are completely ingrained in the culture.

Swedes consume an average of 10.5 kilos of candy a year! 🙈 Which puts Sweden in the top 10 of candy consumption per capita.

This love affair with candy can even be seen in the word we use: “godis” 😊. Godis is short for “godsaker”.

God 😋= Good / tasty.
Saker = Things.

“Tasty things”, or “good things” is how the Swedes call candy 🤤. And just like “stammis” yesterday, it has that cute slang ending “-is”.

Fun Swedish

When it's Friday in Sweden, there is nothing better than fredagsmys 😍.

Fredag is Friday but mys is a word that just does not exist in English, and the Swedes are proud of it 🇸🇪. It is a mix of comfort and coziness. Relaxation and somewhat guilty pleasure 😁.
.
The classic formula for fredagsmys includes but it is not limited to potato chips, Swedish tacos, godis (candy), lots of candles and maybe a movie or serie on Netflix 🎥. And of course some comfy clothes. That is why, if you happen to go to the supermarket today, you will see most Swedes buying a bag of chips!.

The Swedes love all things “mysigt”.

Small Myslexicon.
Mysigt = Something that is mys 😊.
Fredagsmys = Mys fridays.
Att mysa = To mys 😁.
Åh, vad mysigt! = Oh, how mysigt! 😍.
Det var mysigt = It was mysigt!
Hon/Han är mysig = He/She is mysig 🥰.
Mysigare = More mysigt.
Mjukisbyxor = Sweatpants.
Ljus = Candle 🕯️.

Fun Swedish

In Sweden 🇸🇪 you always have that possibility of voting before the date. This is called förtidsrösta which is 3 words mashed together.

För = Pre (preposition for before).
Tid ⌛ = Time.
Rösta = (To) Vote.
Förtidsrösta = Pre-time vote (Early voting).

If you are abroad, the process is quite simple, you can just send your vote through the mail. Which is called a brevröst (brev = letter, röst = vote). 🗳️ Which you might know as “postal voting” 😉.

If you want a challenge 💪 for your Swedish vocabulary, you can do it in person in one of the designated Förtidsröstningslokaler. 🙃 Taking it up a level we have 4 words mashed together.

Röstning = Voting.
Lokaler = Premises / stations.
Förtidsröstningslokaler = Pre time voting premises.

Or just wait until the 13th of September (Election day in Sweden) to avoid saying that 😅.

If you are very detail-oriented 🕵️‍♂️ you might have noticed that when we put two words together in Swedish we just put them together. ℹ️ However, once you want to add a third world into the mix you need to add an extra “s” before the word.

We say förtidSrösta and not förtidrösta 😁. The “S” works as a delimiter to know where the word ends. Otherwise even the Swedes would have trouble reading this.

Fun Swedish

Classic mistake for Swedish learners 🙈. Yet none of you would say “I can speaking”.

What is going on here? 🤔
When we have 2 verbs, typically one is a hjälpverb
(auxiliary verb).

And when using hjälpverb, you should not modify the
main verb.

The ones that work 👍.
✅Jag kan prata svenska = I can speak Swedish.
✅Jag kunde prata svenska = I could speak Swedish.

The one that brings in doubt (because it is wrong 👎).
❌Jag kan pratar svenska = I can speaking Swedish.

Same word, two very different meanings in Swedish.

Att rösta = to vote (a word you will hear a lot since we have elections in Sweden on the 13th of September 2026)
Att rosta = to toast (often bread)

Ö vs O. Not just some tiny dots. Forgetting the tiny dots on the top of the O can change the meaning completly both in written and spoken Swedish.

But don't worry. We are here to help.

Val = whale / election.
Same word, two very different meanings in Swedish.

How can you tell the difference?

Context but also Val (whale) is an en-word and Val (election) is an ett-word.

En val = a whale
Ett val = an election

You will be hearing the word "val" (election) a lot in Sweden in September. Why?
Because Elections to the Riksdag (Swedish parliament) and regional and municipal councils will take place on 13 September 2026 in Sweden.

We are now in Kräftskiva season! 🦞🇸🇪.
Kräftskiva is a Swedish tradition at the end of the
summer.
Kräfta = Crayfish 🦞.
Skiva = Party (though there are more meanings to it)
🥳.
A party excuse around eating kräftor but with a lot more
😉.
