The Guardrail Guy: Crash Files

Welcome to The Guardrail Guy's Crash Files

This channel presents raw, silent archive footage capturing real-world impacts exactly as they happen. We move far beyond controlled crash tests. This provides an unfiltered look at the complex web of factors that cause crashes on our roads.

Roadway Design: How geometry, lane layouts, sightlines, and roadside features influence incident frequency/severity.

Environmental Factors: How ice, rain, fog, low visibility, and sudden surface changes impact vehicle control.

Traffic Psychology/ Human Response: Driver reaction times, spatial awareness, speed, and decision-making .

Cultural & Regional Factors: Observing local driving habits and regional traffic norms across various states.

Every impact is the result of compounding factors: infrastructure, psychology, weather, and mechanics. This channel documents those moments in silence, letting the footage speak for itself.

Content is curated for educational, analytical, and research purposes.

The Guardrail Guy: Crash Files

A YouTube subscriber, Paul, sent me this photo via my website, www.guardrailguy.com .

Paul noted "I've been following your videos for awhile and learning guardrail assembly and problems.I wanted to send you some photos of what I expect is the proper way for a guardrail to absorb energy in a crash. I think the way this one curled up is what they are designed to do."

Paul is right! This is beautiful performance for an SKT guardrail. The system extruded about 14 feet, which is a substantial amount of kinetic energy. A lesser system, or an untreated end, may have produced a deadly spearing.

The SKT works by moving an impact head down the rail, creating a sequence of kinks in the rail that absorbs the kinetic energy. I describe this type of rail as looking like Christmas ribbon candy.

Thanks for sending it!
